Animal Technician 3, Division of Comparative Medicine - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Animal Technician 3 supports Georgetown University's research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research in animals exhibiting species typical behavior for their psychological well-being. Specifically, the supports the Division of Comparative Medicine's animal husbandry and environmental enrichment function in support of animal research initiatives. Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Animal Technician 3 is an accountable member of the DCM team, exemplifying teamwork by interacting with, training and assisting other animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff in a professional and solution-oriented manner. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assist with compliance with standard operating procedures, federal and state regulations
  • Support the acclimation and training activities related to routine procedures
  • Conduct behavioral assessments of animals and work with the research and veterinary staff to address behavioral issues
  • Assist with development and implementation of social housing plans
  • Identify, construct, and maintain enrichment devices
  • Ensure compliance with record keeping for colony enrichment and social housing.
  • Provide care of laboratory animals in a safe, humane and sanitary manner through established husbandry procedures, including safe handling of animals, materials, and equipment exposed to hazardous (biohazardous, radiological or chemical) agents.
  • Support technical procedures that may giving treatments, conducting identification procedures, and performing euthanasia
  • Serve as a role model for newer less experienced technicians
  • Follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Participate actively AALAS continuing education
  • Interact directly with external vendors as well as AAALAC, USDA and IACUC Site inspectors.


Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • 3 to 5 years of experience and demonstrated ability in behavior management and environmental enrichment with nonhuman primates.
  • A working knowledge and experience with essential laboratory animal husbandry, environmental enrichment and behavior management responsibilities and techniques
  • Comfortability with the handling and restraint of mice, rats, nonhuman primates and other species as appropriate
  • Excellent verbal skills for communication of daily work assignments
  • Ability to accurately maintain documentation related to support areas
  • Computer skills, interpersonal skills, and problem solving and analytical skills


Preferred qualification

Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level

Physical Environment

The Animal Technician 3 has assigned desk space within an office, but is expected to spend a significant amount of time in the animal facility. They must lift and carry up to 50 pounds; are exposed to varied temperatures laboratory animals and related equipment/machinery; and work with hazardous chemicals that are used for sanitation.
