The Advising Dean is one of 15 professional staff whose time is primarily devoted to the academic advising of 3,700 undergraduate students in the College pursuing nearly 50 majors and 50+ minors in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs. The advising team of the College supports the Dean of the College in carrying out the general effectiveness of the instructional programs of the College, and in carrying out academic policies and regulations. The Advising Dean monitors students' progress toward degrees, arbitrates important academic issues, oversees and approves registration for courses, provides academic guidance, adjudicates and interprets academic regulations of the College, and supports academic orientation to the University.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, and interacting daily with the deans, support staff, and colleagues in partner offices, the Advising Dean has duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Monitoring students' progress toward degrees, arbitrating important academic issues, overseeing and approving registration for courses, providing academic guidance, adjudicating and interpreting academic regulations of the College, and supporting academic orientation to the University.
  • Maintaining the academic files and ensuring the integrity of the academic record for 300-350 advisees. For those students, reviewing/approving transfer credit, study abroad programs, changes to a student's academic program, and exceptions in the student's degree audit.
  • Consistent with Georgetown's commitment to cura personalis, supporting and advising students on any and all matters which interfere with personal well-being and academic success; and making frequent referrals to - and having regular contact with - campus partner offices, and remaining well-versed in the services those offices provide.
  • Participating in the College Academic Council events, office retreats, New Student Orientation, Family Weekend and Commencement activities in various roles.
  • Interacting with any of the 3,700 students of the College, or any of the main campus faculty who teach them.
  • Handling and resolving many delicate and complex conflicts between student and faculty, student and parent, parent and the institution, with all appropriate tact, sensitivity, and a sense of the academic standards to be applied to each such conflict.
  • Participating in various committees (i.e., admissions, New Student Orientation, Commencement, etc.) as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Master's degree in an academic field appropriate to a College of Arts and Sciences - candidates with a math, computer science or natural science background particularly encouraged to apply
  • 3+ years of experience in higher education advising or administration
  • Demonstrated interest in academic advising
  • Appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education
  • An understanding of Georgetown's Jesuit and Catholic identity
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; good listening skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and set priorities
  • Strong orientation to detail
  • A penchant for problem-solving
  • Ability to work well under pressure and function as a team player
  • High energy
  • Poise, diplomacy and confidence to handle a variety of situations, especially those of a confidential nature and in interactions with faculty, parents and partner offices
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population


Preferred qualifications
  • Familiarity with student information systems
  • Prior teaching, counseling or administrative work
