Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job:

The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WOLC) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) invites applications for a dynamic tenure-track faculty member in French/Applied Linguistics at the rank of Assistant Professor. The required teaching load is six (6) courses annually and consists of online and face-to-face teaching of French language courses and of linguistics courses in French or English at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. The successful candidate will participate in the development of the French program and engage in the cultural and academic life of the department. The start date for this position is August 2022.

The Department of World Languages and Cultures (WOLC) is launching a hiring initiative to appoint a tenure-track faculty member who(se): 1) bring visibility, renown, and additional impact to our department, 2) add to a long -standing goal of increasing diversity (e.g., ethnic, LGBTQI+, religious, etc.) across our department, and 3) intellectual and pedagogical expertise engages racial intersectionality. Teaching responsibilities are at the main SHSU campus in Huntsville, Texas (located 70 miles north of Houston), and online. Educational Requirements for the Position:

Candidates must have an earned PhD by August 2022 in French or a related field (must have a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in French with native or near-native fluency). Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in French applied linguistics, second/foreign language pedagogy, second language acquisition. Candidates who are ABD at the time of application must have a scheduled defense before August 2022 for their application to be considered.

  • Expertise/documented interest in French for professional purposes (e.g., language teaching, business, criminal justice, healthcare) and/or French for Spanish speakers.
  • Prior experience teaching French online
  • Prior experience teaching a diverse body of undergraduate students
  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaborative skills

Other Requirements for the Position:

Sam Houston State University is located in Huntsville in the beautiful piney woods of East Texas approximately one hour north of the ethnically and culturally diverse Houston metropolitan area. SHSU is classified as a “Doctoral/Professional University” by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
