Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job:

The Department of History at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of slavery, to begin Fall 2022. We seek an historian who specializes in slavery in the Atlantic World, and whose scholarship and teaching foregrounds the lived experiences of enslaved persons. The department is especially interested in candidates whose work maps onto one or more of the thematic tracks organizing the department’s M.A. program: (1) Rights & Identity; (2) War & Violence; and (3) Encounters & Exchanges. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a promising research agenda. Online teaching experience is a plus. The successful candidate will be expected to teach the first half of the United States history survey, as well as upper-division courses and graduate seminars in the history of slavery. The teaching load is three courses per semester.

Educational Requirements for the Position:

Ph.D. in History strongly preferred, but those holding doctoral degrees in closely related disciplines may be considered. The Ph.D. is required prior to appointment but ABD candidates may be considered.
