Position Summary:

The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

This is a 12-month tenure track Assistant Professor position which reports to the Head of Content Organization and Management but will work in close collaboration with other library units. In this tenure track position, you can expect to learn continuously in a rapidly changing academic landscape. We will help you be successful by providing support and professional development opportunities. Anticipated salary range is $55,000-58,000.

Collection Strategist & Resource Access Librarian is responsible for managing the day-to-day progress of complex collection assessment, including assessment of print, electronic, and media materials. This work can range from working with subject librarians to maintain subject collection development policies to implementing and revising the overall methodology for the assessment program. The person in this position will:

  • Serve as the primary contact for collection assessment activities that may include program reviews, curriculum proposal review, accreditation reports, and internal assessments;
  • Coordinate a collaborative process for prioritizing and acquiring resources across disciplinary areas;
  • Collaborate across institutions in the WNCLN Consortium, Carolina Consortium, and UNC System Consortium to develop shared collections and explore issues, challenges, and opportunities related to cooperative collection development;
  • Pilot and assess new collection development approaches using knowledge of the scholarly publishing landscape and emerging trends in publisher agreements including open access resources and OERs;
  • Work with the Acquisitions Librarian to maintain an efficient workflow for ordering and renewal in accordance with spending priorities and with subject liaisons to identify and implement efficient modes of collection maintenance;
  • Produce analyses, data visualizations, and reports;
  • Develop and lead collection assessment efforts to ensure alignment with research, teaching and learning priorities at WCU and effective stewardship of collections budgets;
  • Contribute to data-informed budget advocacy efforts at the campus level;
  • Use assessment techniques and data analytics tools (e.g. Tableau or similar software) to support collection development activities and lead, develop and complete projects;
  • Lead the selection and renewal of e-resources in consultation with the Collections Advisory Committee and individual librarians;
  • Participate in evaluating vendor offers; prepare and present information to appropriate library groups to help inform collection decisions;
  • Incorporate data-driven and user-focused assessment methodologies to analyze the libraries’ current collection management program;
  • Provide support to collections coordinators and subject specialists for the selection and deselection of library materials across all formats

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position:

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues as well as independently demonstrating effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in developing academic library collections including demand-driven acquisitions, evidence-based acquisitions, coordinated collection development, and shared collections
  • Demonstrated competency in collections assessment and evaluation across varied formats, collections and disciplines including retrieval and analysis of usage statistics
  • Ability to plan, document, and complete projects

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited program
  • Minimum of three years working in professional positions in or in relation to academic libraries, academic library consortia, with vendors of library resources, or other related fields

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with vendor platforms
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends in collection development
  • Demonstrated advanced organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, communication (written and oral) and time management skills
  • Aptitude for accurate and detail-oriented work
  • Ability to provide customer service in a diverse, academic environment including library staff, vendors, Western Carolina University community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data analysis and visualization
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with library systems/services including integrated library systems, online catalogs, and indexes/databases
  • Demonstrated proficiency with relevant computer software, particularly with Microsoft Office products such as Excel
