The Way Lab at the University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus welcomes applications for computational postdoctoral positions.

The Way Lab's mission is to integrate high-dimensional biomedical data into clinical decision-making and drug discovery. We are biologists who use data science to reduce human suffering. We develop and validate analytical methods, novel approaches, and write open source software for the biology community. We aim to improve patient treatment strategies, discover biological mechanisms, and enable computational reproducibility with open source software.

We are currently focused on developing cell morphology as a systems biology measurement of cell state. We are establishing collaborations with academic and industry labs around the world to tackle challenging biomedical problems of today and tomorrow. Nature of Work:

The Way Lab at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, seeks a full-time (1.0 FTE) Postdoctoral Fellow to carry out research in the area of biomedical data science. Postdocs will have the opportunity to work with large collections of imaging data, both publicly available and from collaborative projects, and to generate hypotheses from these data.

Research projects center around developing cell morphology as a systems biology measurement, and include: 1) developing new methods and approaches to extract and process biologically-meaningful representations from image data, 2) building new approaches to interpret cell morphology representations, 3) discovering mechanistic links between cell and molecular readouts through image and molecular data integration, and 4) write tested and well-documented software to power analyses in academic and industry labs around the world.

Postdocs are expected to contribute to the lab's culture of creativity, integrity, courage, and openness. We expect all postdocs to share their own methodological advances and biological discoveries at both national and international venues.

Supervision Received:

The Postdoctoral Fellow will report to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Gregory Way, PhD.

The PI will mentor, provide research direction, and train the Postdoctoral Fellow in effective management and scientific approaches. The PI aims to provide personalized mentorship and opportunities to fulfill the specific career goals as mutually established.

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Designing and planning research projectsWriting software and analytical workflows to carry out specific experimentsAssisting in research grant applicationsAnalyzing and interpreting research resultsMaintaining effective communication with the investigator and other team membersKeeping an organized record of research experiments and results on GitHub (lab notebook)Assisting in the training and mentoring of students and techniciansPreparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journalsParticipating in lab meetings and attending scientific seminars and conferences
Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $70,000 - $70,000.

Qualifications
Minimum Required Qualifications

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD/MD in a relevant scientific discipline3+ years of experience with common data science tools (e.g. Jupyter, pandas, dplyr, dask, sklearn, skimage)
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:

    A deep interest in and excitement about working with cell imagesA strong background in biomedical data science, computer science, computer vision, machine learning, statistics, genetics, cell biology, systems biology or a closely related fieldProgramming experience (e.g. Python) with attributable contributions to source codeExperience with computational reproducibility tools (e.g. Github, conda, snakemake)A track record of scientific productivity, leadership, and a commitment to your craft
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Excellent oral and written communication skillsAbility to learn and implement new technologies Experience handling large datasets in a UNIX/LINUX environmentExperience with high-performance cluster or cloud computingExperience with data visualization tools (e.g. ggplot, seaborn, shiny) for effective data communication and publicationKnowledge of existing software packages used for computer vision and machine learningAbility to work independently and effectively with others as part of a multidisciplinary scientific team
