The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. As of the 2019-2020 academic year, we currently enroll over 25,000 students in which 59% identify as Latinx, 12% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 19% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 4% as multiracial. Fresno City is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Counseling at Fresno City College, the counselor will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities including personal, career, educational, orientation, and transfer counseling with individuals and/or groups, working with probation, athletics, assessment, and outreach. The counselor will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive counseling services for students including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling on an appointment basis;
  • Providing group counseling sessions, orientations, and workshops;
  • Assisting students in clarifying their educational goals, selection of courses, and developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
  • Monitoring student progress through comprehensive electronic data systems;
  • Maintaining close working relationships with program and other instructional faculty, feeder high schools, and community resources agencies;
  • Working with a diverse population of students to emphasize strategies for educational planning and transfer preparation;
  • Collaborating with instructional and counseling faculty and staff from other departments and programs, including Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, EOPS/CARE, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Puente, IDILE, SYMBAA, USEAA, Veterans/International, TRiO, Student Support Services, College Relations and Outreach, and other programs;
  • Participating in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities;
  • Knowledge and utilization of instructional best practices for students in the classroom;
  • Utilizing and keeping abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories that include integrating technology to support student learning and identification of career objectives;
  • Providing counseling support specific to the needs of students on academic probation or disqualification;
  • Conducting intake interviews, assessment interpretation, and use of multiple measures to refer students to the appropriate English and math placements;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning; and
  • Work assignments in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, and on-line or off-campus as needed;
  • Performing other related duties as requested; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND

  • Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;

OR

  • A valid California Community College Credential;

OR

  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Experience working with a diverse student population;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students;
  • Experience in designing and preparing Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for community college students;
  • Experience teaching courses in career and personal development and/or conducting workshops;
  • Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation processes;
  • Knowledge of student development theories pertaining to community college students;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain counseling notes in Colleague, SARS, or similar electronic record keeping software in a timely and effective manner;
  • Experience working effectively with student success programs;
  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
  • Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;
  • Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions;
  • Experience participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus;
  • Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status;
  • Demonstrated ability to connect students with on/off campus resources to assist them in their college life management;
  • Demonstrated ability to use a broad range of technology pertaining to data collection and analysis for student success;
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on issues of student success;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:

181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is $62,049 – $93,414 based on education and experience. Salary and stipends will be prorated based on start date. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Student Services and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

State Center Community College District (SCCCD) was formed in 1964 when it assumed control of Fresno City College and Reedley College. SCCCD serves approximately one million people and 18 unified and high school districts in more than 5,500 square miles of urban and rural territory, including most of Fresno and Madera counties and portions of Kings and Tulare counties. SCCCD is governed by a seven-member board of trustees who represent seven trustee areas. Total district enrollment for the fall semester 2012 is over 34,000 students. SCCCD is a merit system district with over 2,300 faculty and classified staff represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The total operating budget for SCCCD in 2012-13 is $168 million. 

Fresno City College, established in 1910, enrolls in excess of 22,000 students and offers more than 100 associate of arts and science degree programs and 60 certificate of achievement programs in vocational/occupational areas. Reedley College, established in 1926, is located in Reedley (approximately 25 miles southeast of Fresno) and enrolls approximately 6,200 students in a variety of courses and degree programs in occupational education and the arts and sciences. SCCCD operates three educational centers with a combined enrollment of approximately 8,300 students. The Willow International, Madera and Oakhurst centers offer programs in general education for transfer and two-year degrees. In addition, the district offers occupational and technical training at its Career and Technology Center and the Training Institute.
