Department Information

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is focused on student success through implementation of high impact practices. For example, we have a Learning Assistant (LA) program and a physics teacher education pathway to help students seeking careers in secondary education. We also promote original research experiences, global engagement, and computation throughout the curriculum to help prepare students for a variety of impactful careers. Our department is committed to public engagement with several outreach programs, such as free public programming at our observatory, free planetarium shows, and participation in the annual Dahlonega Science Festival. In addition, our faculty coordinate several outreach programs targeting diverse and underserved minorities in the local region.

We are a supportive, cooperative, and collaborative department with 16 faculty located on UNG's Dahlonega, Gainesville, and Oconee campuses. The Dahlonega physics program offers a B.S. degree in physics, a concentration in astrophysics, a physics teacher education pathway, and a 3+2 physics/engineering dual-degree program with partnering institutions. These programs currently produce 15 – 20 B.S. graduates per academic year. Department facilities include extensive equipment for introductory and upper-level labs, a digital planetarium, and an astronomical observatory with 24-in and 28-in telescopes located 4 miles from campus.

Job Summary

The University of North Georgia (UNG) Department of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in physics to begin in August 2022. This position will be located on the UNG Dahlonega campus and is open to all sub-fields of physics, astronomy, and engineering. Of particular interest are candidates that can contribute toward one or more Departmental initiatives supporting students pursuing diverse and meaningful career paths, producing more high school physics teachers, and educating highly qualified professional scientists.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching 12 credit hours per semester (4 courses) at all levels in the curriculum.
  • Maintain an active research program with undergraduate collaborators.
  • Service to the Department, College, and University.
  • Academic advisement for 10 - 20 undergraduate students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of or openness to evidence-based teaching methods is preferred.
  • Ability to teach physics courses and labs across the undergraduate curriculum
  • Ability to teach astronomy or astrophysics courses is desirable.
  • Incorporating computation in the classroom is desirable.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, or a related field
  • Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to quality teaching and student success at the undergraduate level, and be able to teach courses at all levels in the curriculum.
  • Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to implement an active research program, and show a strong interest and capacity for involving undergraduates as collaborators.
  • Outreach programs that promote diversity, inclusion, and equity in physics are highly valued and strongly encouraged.
  • Successful candidates with plans to encourage participation among members of under-represented groups through teaching, research, and public engagement will be especially considered.
