Position Summary

The Department of Sociology at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks candidates for a tenure-system Assistant or Associate Professor position in sociology of health and medicine. As part of an initiative within the College of Social Science, this position will strengthen the leadership in the emerging MSU Consortium for Sexual and Gender Minority Health, which is housed in the School of Social Work. The 9-month academic year position begins on August 16, 2022.

We seek candidates with established expertise in investigating issues such as mental health, physical conditions, health disparities, social determinants of health, and health care service among sexual and general minority (SGM) people and communities. Successful candidates will help strengthen a group of nationally known scholars of SGM health and medicine to promote change in policy, programming, and practice for SGM communities.

Minimum Requirements

Successful candidates must have:

  • a PhD in Sociology or closely related field completed by the date of hire;
  • established expertise in sociology of health or social determinants of health with a substantial focus on SGM health and medicine;
  • established record of scholarly publications in SGM health and medicine research;
  • potential for or established record of securing extramural research funding;
  • strong potential for leading multidisciplinary research teams;
  • potential for or demonstrated evidence of high-quality instruction and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and
  • potential for or demonstrated evidence of effective service to the institution, leadership in the discipline, and/or engagement with broader publics.
  • Desired Qualifications

    Preferred candidates will have:

  • a commitment to conduct research that informs practice and policy with diverse and underrepresented groups;
  • a strong record of or potential for securing extramural funding; and
  • scholarly interests that connect with current departmental strengths of environmental sociology and/or sociology of migration.
