Summary of Duties:

The Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (Director of DEI) is a new position at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The Director of DEI will drive college initiatives around diversity, equity, and inclusion and provide guidance for the implementation of these efforts throughout the college.

As the Director, you are responsible for advancing equality and impact for the college and those it serves, creating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, and staff. You will be the key senior leader to guide and implement this work. In this role, you will identify strategic ways to incorporate DEI in the college culture and climate.

Working closely with the College’s dean, faculty, staff and students, you are responsible for strategic planning activities and for implementing and managing programs designed to recruit, retain, and support diverse pools of undergraduate, professional and graduate students in the College. This includes collaboration with the dean, faculty, and staff increasing DEI efforts during faculty and staff recruitment process.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to area of specialization and three (3) years of experience directly related to the specialty area. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Additional Requirements:

  • Three years of relevant experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion, including designing and delivering DEI content and experiences.

  • Demonstrated success leading and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

  • Demonstrated success in collaboration with others to achieve solutions, resolve issues, and overcome hurdles.

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.

  • Effective communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.

  • Experience working in a higher education environment.

  • Experience in veterinary, medical and/or scientific fields, which may include experience in medical or veterinary medical education.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience.

  • Experience in program assessment, reporting, and evaluation

  • Demonstrated organizational skills.

WSU's student body statewide is ethnically diverse: 31 percent of our students are underrepresented minorities, and first-generation students represent nearly 33 percent of the total enrollment. Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
