The University of Virginia Darden School of Business, one of the world's leading business schools, seeks a highly motivated professional to join its Student Affairs team.

The Assistant Director plays an important role in Darden’s Office of Student Affairs (OSA), providing support for Darden’s students during their MBA journey. The Assistant Director serves as a liaison between Darden OSA and the UVA central grounds Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS), ensuring that Darden’s clubs operate in accordance with guidelines set by the University of Virginia and that Darden students are supported through the judiciary, Honor, Title IX, and all other related processes. This position require extensive contact with students, faculty and staff throughout the university and occasionally with organizations within the City of Charlottesville.

The Assistant Director also advises and provides training for Darden student leaders, coordinates orientation programs and meets with graduate students 1:1 to provide personal, professional and academic advising, coaching and support.

This position requires experiences with a diverse student population as well as the ability to work well independently and with a variety of stakeholders in a fast-paced, selective, and highly competitive academic environment. The Office of Student Affairs has a need for individuals who are quick learners, strong team players and have an unparalleled interest in supporting student success.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

  • Advises Darden’s student clubs.
  • Provides oversight of policy and procedures for Darden residential MBA student clubs.
  • Attends and supports club activities (some evening and weekend work will be required).
  • Advises and provides training for Darden student leaders.
  • Coordinates global and diversity programming for all Darden students.
  • Advises in the coordination of resilience-related programming for all Darden students.
  • Advises in the coordination of small-group and impromptu programming for all Darden students.
  • Advises in the coordination of orientation and assisting in the execution of all related events.
  • Coordinates graduation activities.
  • Meets with graduate students 1:1 to provide personal, professional and academic advising, coaching and support.
  • Coordinates community engagement programs in the Charlottesville and broader community, including the Darden Prisoner Reentry Program.
  • Serves as a liaison between Admissions and Student Affairs to ensure a seamless transition from admitted student to matriculated student.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Darden School Foundation Office of Engagement to ensure strong connections between current students and Darden Alumni.
  • Provides support services to current MBA students with a focus on the implementation and evaluation of programs and services that build a strong inclusive graduate community.
  • Provides support to graduate student affinity groups across Darden.
  • Works in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Global, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on OSA/DEI sponsored programming for affinity groups, including but not limited to domestic URM students, women, parents, dual degree, and PhD students.
  • Supports the Senior and Associate Directors of Admissions for Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with programming.
  • Coordinates programming that encourages connection between clubs across all degree programs.
  • Supports Professional Degrees Student Affairs and Engagement as they develop their office and support a growing number of clubs.

Professional experience and education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least five years of experience required with Bachelor’s degree, one year of experience required with Master’s degree.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, advising student organizations, advising/mentoring students.
  • Experience with major event planning and leadership development preferred.
  • Excellent presentation, organization, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high level of professionalism, customer service, attention to detail, follow-through, teamwork, flexibility and positive, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and in confidence, understanding the need to protect confidentiality.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and experience working with diverse populations.
  • Excellent ability to build and maintain effective collaborative relationships, including a diverse set of staff, faculty and graduate students.
  • Excellent communication, customer service and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to digest feedback and information (verbal or written), synthesize, and brainstorm potential solutions.
  • Strong process management, influencing and problem resolution skills.
  • Agile learner; able to readily apply past learning's in new situations to generate solutions to challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience handling multiple priorities and / or managing multiple initiatives and timelines successfully in a professional office environment.
  • Higher Education experience, working with students, faculty and academic programs preferred, working with programming for working professional students a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel).
  • Familiarity with web site development, database applications and tools for virtual meetings (Zoom preferred).
  • Believes in and is motivated by Darden’s mission.
