The Young Writers Workshop (YWW) of the University of Virginia, established in 1982 as the nation's flagship program for teenage writers, is in its fifth decade of bringing together a community of writers with a common purpose: to create a supportive, non-competitive environment where writers in grades 9-12 can live and work together as artists.

Sponsored by the UVA School of Education and Human Development, the YWW is seeking an Assistant Residential Program Director (ARPD) to staff its summer program for aspiring teenage writers. The ARPD assists the Residential Program Director (RPD) in all duties involved in ensuring the support and safety of all parties in residence. The ARPD is responsible for:

  • assisting the RPD in developing the daily meeting agenda based on an assessment of program effectiveness each day;
  • assisting the RPD in supervision of residential counselor staff, including events and activities scheduled on the evening and weekend calendars;
  • assisting with student participants, instructors, and guest artists throughout the week, including events and activities scheduled on the evening and weekend calendars
  • facilitating and coordinating programming such as visiting writer readings, theater performances, field trips and recreational activities, including such events and activities scheduled on the evening and weekend calendars;
  • conducting the evening counselor meeting;
  • maintaining a daily calendar of events and designating individual staff responsible for each component;
  • scheduling daily consultations with the RPD, with whom all decisions related to the residential community are made.

Required:

  • The completion of at least two years of liberal arts coursework is required by the time of employment;
  • previous experience on the YWW or other residential staff;
  • at least two years of experience supervising and instructing adolescents in an academic program (this includes working with adolescents in a tutoring capacity, academic camp, after-school program, or equivalent type of experience);
  • demonstrated effectiveness in supervising peers, team building, and leadership;
  • strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and effective collaboration with others;
  • the ability to relate to adolescents;
  • involvement in the literary arts, such as study in creative writing courses, participation in theater arts groups, journalism experience, or performing arts expertise;
  • knowledge of basic word processing/computer programs (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Google docs, search engines).

Preferred:

  • a Bachelor's degree;
  • creative writing skill in one or more genres as well as an understanding of the writing process;
  • skill in secondary-level instructional methods;
  • video and audio production programs (e.g., Photoshop, Garage Band); web design (e.g., Google Classroom, Squarespace, WordPress);
  • a valid driver's license;
  • lifeguard training, first aid, and CPR certification.

The Assistant Residential Program Director lives and works at Sweet Briar College for 6 weeks during the summer, from June 12-July 24, 2022.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,250 - $4,750
