The Merced College NextUp/EOPS Counselor will provide qualifying students with over-and-above services to help students succeed. The NextUp/EOPS Counselor will work with one of the most vulnerable disproportionately- impacted groups on campus, and we are in need of a counselor that understands the population, is willing to work with other support services, promotes the NextUp Program, and is invested in student success. NextUp provides students with an array of integrated services including academic, vocational, and social/emotional support, as well as intrusive academic counseling approaches and proactive collaborative support, academic assessment and advisement, advocacy, and follow-up.     General Description:
    This is a full-time, non-tenured track assignment in Counseling Department at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Equity and Student Success. The counselor will provide academic, vocational, and personal counseling to students identified as disproportionately impacted at Merced College; provide academic, career, and culturally responsive and intrusive counseling (face to face and/or online), helping a variety of disproportionately impacted students including our NextUp (Foster Youth) students to make effective decisions in pursuit of their academic, career, and personal goals; keep abreast of changing degree, certificate, transfer and EOPS/NextUp information in order to advise students about the most current requirements and train other counselors; lead group presentations including student-interest workshops and seminars, orientations, group advising, and other matriculation functions; coordinate student success initiatives in the NextUp program; serve as liaison for NextUp related issues to academic and career technical education departments, student services, and instructional faculty; participate in program review and development and assessment of service area outcomes; participate in ongoing professional development activities related to NextUp and in the field of counseling; engage in other activities (such as community outreach) as requested by the Dean. The standard counseling load may include evening hours, extreme registration events or adjusted hours.

    Examples of Duties
    Essential Functions:

    • Provide professional academic/vocational and personal counseling interventions to support student success of current and/or former foster youth.
    • Develop educational plans for current and/or former foster youth.
    • Serve as an advisor for identified clubs and organizations, as needed
    • Assist in preparing outreach materials
    • Work with current and/or former foster youth and other disproportionately impacted groups
    • Provide culturally responsive and intrusive counseling in a variety of college settings
    • Teach guidance courses and/or other academic courses as appropriate
    • Provide in-service to faculty and staff in areas of expertise
    • Function as liaison between Counseling Department and the various instructional areas
    • Maintain regular contact with assigned feeder schools and community partners
    • Participate in college's learning outcomes assessment program, including courses, program, and institutional assessments
    • Provide students with the Student Success and Support Program core service of orientation, assessment interpretation and review, student educational planning, and academic follow up
    • Assist students with the following appeal processes and waiver: Financial aid, enrollment priority, remedial course work, probation and course repetition.
    • Participate in college wide student retention efforts (early alert, etc.)
    • Perform other related duties as assigned


    Typical Qualifications
    Required:
  • Master's degree from acceptable accredited institution in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling
  • OR
  • Bachelor's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in one of the above listed degrees and a current license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) valid in California
  • OR
  • Community College Instructor Credential in Counseling
  • OR
  • The equivalent AND
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

  • Preferred:
    • College level counseling and teaching experience (NextUp Counseling preferred) Experience with the use of Student MIS systems and computer-based educational planning software
    • Background knowledge of EOPS/NextUp regulations, policies and procedures

    Knowledge of:
    • Matriculation regulations, current Student Equity and Achievement Program requirements and processes
    • Current technology skills related to counseling and a willingness to pursue future technological developments
    • Familiarity and/or experience working with college programs that aid socio-economically disadvantaged and/or academically underprepared students
    Ability to:
    • Assess and assist the whole student, including cultural differences and/or disabling conditions
    • Communicate effectively
    • Provide accurate academic/vocational information
    • Implement innovative and flexible counseling methods to increase matriculation rates among non-traditional students
    • Function as a student advocate facilitating the resolution of college related problems
    • Work independently in small groups on educational projects
