Reports To: Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation
Supervises: Assistant Coach

Summary of Position:
Under the direction of the Assistant Dean and Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation, the Head Coach/ Physical Education Instructor is responsible for directing and implementing all aspects of a Mills College women's NCAA Division III athletic program, teaching assigned physical education courses, performing administrative duties and other related assignments. This position advances the Mills College Mission and Strategic Plan by facilitating education of the whole person, enhancing recruitment and retention of students, and providing a vibrant and inclusive campus life.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Direct and implement all aspects of the intercollegiate sport program.
  • Coordinate, lead, and supervise safe and engaging events, and advise, challenge and support student academic and athletic excellence, transformative learning, wellness, leadership development, and community service.
  • Direct and lead student-athlete and team physical training, skill and strategic development, in practice and in competition.
  • Establish and implement safe team schedules and travel arrangements.
  • Accurately manage budgets and financial records in accordance with Mills College policies.
  • Safely drive vehicles for APER department activities.
  • Order, track, and maintain equipment and uniforms.
  • Comply with NCAA Division III, APER department, affiliated conference, and Mills College regulations and requirements.
  • Participate in coaches meetings and fulfill duties of related sports conferences and affiliations as assigned.
  • Hire, train, and supervise an assistant coach.
  • Teach physical education courses as assigned.
  • Establish and maintain effective and productive working relationships within a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Establish and maintain an effective customer service orientation towards all persons contacted during the course of job performance.
  • Perform special assignments as directed, such as coordinate: recreation, APER vehicles, recruitment, retention, APER special events or programs, APER equipment, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, community engagement, or fitness center management, etc.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participate in department meetings for project planning and direction setting.
  • Maintain safe work conditions and comply with established safety policies, practices, procedures, and requirements.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Thorough understanding and proven success coaching the sport.
  • NCAA rules and regulations regarding eligibility, recruiting, practice limitations, and related policies.
  • Advanced coaching and motivation techniques.
  • Body mechanics principles, flexibility and strength training and mental training techniques and related health issues.
  • Pedagogy of assigned sport.
  • Technical aspects in field of specialty.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Interpersonal skills using active listening, direct and tactful communication, patience, and courtesy.
  • Public speaking techniques.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Safety policies, practices, procedures, and requirements of the department, College and Illness & Injury Prevention Plan.
  • Facilities and maintenance requirements.

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and coach an assigned College athletic sporting team program within the academic and athletic philosophies of the NCAA Division III and the College Mission Statement.
  • Provide for intercollegiate competition, physical education, and class instruction of assigned sporting activities.
  • Coordinate, organize, and participate in recruitment activities.
  • Meet with students to provide motivation, guidance, and referrals as necessary.
  • Monitor and control assigned budgetary expenditures.
  • Provide for training regimen for assigned teams, including drills, organized play, and other activities.
  • Schedule and coordinate practice and conditioning sessions.
  • Schedule and conduct team meetings as required.
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations.
  • Maintain routine records.
  • Perform public relations activities.
  • Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.
  • Operate, service, and make minor repairs on equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective and productive working relationships within a diverse and multicultural environment.
  • Establish and maintain an effective customer service orientation towards all persons contacted during the course of job performance.

Education and Training:
  • Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Coaching, Kinesiology, Sport Psychology, Sports Management or related field and three years of coaching experience.
  • Valid California driver's license and safe driving record. Registration as Mills College driver. Successful completion of Mills driver training.
  • Additional requirements to drive 15-passenger van: California Class B commercial driver's license with passenger endorsement, current medical certificate, drug testing.
  • Valid and current First Aid and CPR-AED certificate issued by an authorized agency.
  • Criminal background check.
  • Strength and Conditioning Coach certification from a nationally recognized agency preferred.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands:
  • Indoor and outdoor work environment
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Adverse weather conditions.
  • Some evening, weekend and variable hours.
  • There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause significant stress.

  • Work occasionally requires physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.
  • Adequate vision to analyze and correct student performance, ensure participant safety and drive.
