Job Description

The Arizona K12 Center at Northern Arizona University seeks an experienced, dynamic leader to serve as the Assistant Director of Programs. This position supports the programmatic development of the Arizona K12 Center as well as the evaluation of all professional learning events. Reporting to the Executive Director of the Arizona K12 Center, this leadership position plays a central role in supporting the programs of the Center as well as its media arm (e.g., podcasts, videos, and publications) in terms of content development along the continuum of practice from preservice to in-service and from novice teachers to teacher leaders. It is expected that the Assistant Director of Programs will have a deep knowledge set around research-based supports of beginning teachers, candidate support for teachers seeking National Board Certification, and teacher leadership as well as the content areas of literacy, mathematics, technology, and English language acquisition.

It is also expected that the Assistant Director of Programs will do the following:

  • Take an active role in facilitating professional learning for clients and/or staff.
  • Support the advancement of learning opportunities associated with the Center’s Professional Learning Plan.
  • Meet and work with stakeholders in the field to advance the work of the Center and establish/maintain relationships.
  • Stay abreast of current trends in professional learning, the needs of pK-12 teachers, and the standards that support learning and practice.
  • Seek funding opportunities to expand and enhance the overall work of the Center as we take on new initiatives.
  • Provide guidance, support, and coaching to program directors while holding themself and those they supervise to the highest standards.
  • Ensure budget accountability.
  • Assist in event set up/tear down and oversee the use of the Arizona K12 Center’s in-house studio.
  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director to provide updates, feedback, and insight.
  • Participate in strategic planning and serve on behalf of the Executive Director as necessary.

Professional Learning Programming - 35%

  • Supports the mission and goals of the Arizona K12 Center through a programmatic focus on professional learning for Arizona’s K-12 teachers spanning the teaching continuum from preservice to teacher leadership with the ubiquitous use of technology integration where appropriate.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to special programs, partnerships, and/or initiatives.
  • Works directly with school districts in the development and oversight of customized learning opportunities.
  • Stays abreast of current trends/research in professional learning and needs of schools and teachers.

Leadership and Supervision - 20%

  • Provides direct supervision of program directors (currently 5 employees) while providing ongoing support, training, and coaching.
  • Provides meaningful oversight which includes setting benchmarks.
  • Reviews materials (print and digital) as necessary for overall quality and consistency with branding and values.
  • Attends the Arizona K12 Center Board of Directors Meetings and provides data and reports as necessary.

Planning and Goal Setting - 15%

  • Works directly with the program directors and the operations team to develop a comprehensive array of professional learning opportunities.
  • Sets metrics for each event in terms of promotion, registrants, goals, and outcomes while ensuring connections to teaching standards, professional learning standards, and the Five Core Propositions.
  • Assists in fiscal accountability of professional learning events.

Content Development - 10%

  • Assists in the oversight of the development of content for Center projects which includes but is not limited to its podcast, annual calendar, promotional materials, publications.
  • Collaborates with staff to seek ways to expand content reach.
  • Oversees the development and execution of work for hire.

Management - 10%

  • Seeks grant and funding opportunities to expand the professional learning opportunities of the Center.
  • Provide oversight and direction in program evaluation and grant management.
  • Develop and/or refine systems to manage overall work and projects.

Strategic Planning - 5%

  • Seeks ways to integrate the work of the Center, including the use of its Professional Learning Plan, into various initiatives.
  • Assists the Executive Director in creating strategic opportunities for growth and expansion of the Center’s work.
  • Meets regularly with the Executive Director and Leadership to determine strategic directions of the Center.

Other - 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds and tape down power cords.
  • Must be able to be out of town to facilitate and work an event for up to one week several times during the year.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of management and/or supervisory experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of K-12 teaching and coaching experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in education or related field
  • National Board Certification (current)
  • Experience in working with adult learners and facilitating professional learning opportunities
  • Experience supporting teachers seeking National Board Certification
  • Experience supporting beginning teachers through instructional mentoring

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of K-12 education and the standards that guide teaching practice and professional learning.
  • Knowledge of research that undergirds effective professional learning.
  • Knowledge of the standards and practices around literacy, English language acquisition, technology, and mathematics.
  • Working knowledge of electronic mail and calendars in an Apple environment including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software such Survey Monkey and ability to run, analyze, and summarize computer-generated reports.

  • Experience developing original materials and resources to support program elements.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

Salary range begins at $83,312. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
