Reed College is seeking a Director of International Programs to join the Office of the Dean of the Faculty. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will be to lead and develop the college’s international programs, including study abroad and the language scholar programs. The eight language scholars hired each year to work on campus report to this position. The Director of International Programs reports to the Dean of Faculty.

This is a full-time, exempt role with typical working hours Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reed College offers an exceptional benefits package, including comprehensive and cost-free medical and dental insurance for you, and a 60% discount on medical and dental insurance for your dependents, 403(b) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution (after one year of service), 22 days of paid vacation, paid holidays, half-day Fridays in the summer, and many other campus amenities. Who You Are

  • You have direct experience working with college students and you enjoy interacting with students at this stage in their development.
  • You have at least three years of experience working in a role that supports international education or study abroad at the college level, and you have a master’s degree in liberal arts, education, or a related field. Or, you have an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • You are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in your workplace. You have had the experience of advancing equity through your lived experience, your work, or your volunteer work. You are committed to providing study abroad opportunities to students with identities traditionally underrepresented in education abroad.
  • You have direct experience working with faculty and establishing mutually respectful relationships with faculty comes easily to you. You have experience working on committees with staff and faculty.
  • You understand the importance of collaborative decision making.
  • Ideally, you have at least three years’ experience leading direct reports, either as staff, domestic students, or international students. You already know that you like management and having direct reports, or you are excited to take this on in your next role.
  • You understand immigration law as it pertains to students and faculty. Ideally, you have experience managing applications for non-immigrant and immigrant status.
  • You pay close attention to details and are careful to get things right the first time.
  • You are an exceptional communicator, in person, in writing, and online. You always follow up when people reach out to you.
  • You are a self-starter. You can set priorities and work plans for yourself, and share them with your supervisor and other collaborators. You are comfortable leading initiatives from idea creation, through collaborative discussion and design, to implementation.
  • Ideally, you have studied or lived abroad and can speak about your experience in a way that excites others.
  • Ideally, you are proficient in at least two languages.
  • You are able to travel domestically and internationally to evaluate programs.
  • You are eligible to act as the Responsible Office (RO) and Primary/Designated School Official (P/DSO) for the College’s J and F visa programs respectively.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and develop the college’s overseas study and exchange programs for enrolled Reed students, as well as domestic study and exchange at U.S. institutions for enrolled Reed students.
  • In consultation with faculty, identify domestic and foreign off-campus study opportunities. Represent the college and negotiate formal associations with these. Manage the college’s 70+ formal associations that already exist.
  • In collaboration with the Dean of Faculty and the staff and faculty members of the “Off-Campus Study Committee,” evaluate our current international studies program and develop a long range plan for international studies at and beyond Reed.
  • Coordinate advising, application process, institutional nomination, and placement of Reed students to off-campus study as well as inbound short-term exchange students. Maintain connections and communication with students abroad who are studying in these programs, and address student and/or parent concerns. Conduct periodic site evaluations and host these organizations and institutions when they visit Reed. Oversee annual program billing (revenues in excess of $1.5 million). Partner closely with the chair of the Off Campus Studies Committee.
  • Lead the college’s language scholars program. Each spring and summer, hire (the currently) eight foreign language scholars who live on campus in the language houses. Serve as mentor, trainer, and supervisor for the language scholars. Work collaboratively with the Office of Residence Life and relevant academic departments to ensure that language scholars are providing effective programming to enhance language house residents’ learning of language and culture.
  • Represent Reed as a responsible official when dealing with the State Department, Department of Labor, State Department, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Provide periodic reports to these agencies, as required to support our programs. Each year, obtain work authorization for those who teach or assist in the academic program, including H and J visas.
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of International Student Services on immigration and other matters related to supporting engagement in Reed’s international community.
  • It is estimated that this role spends its time and efforts in the following proportions: 50% for off-campus study, 20% for international students and language scholar programs, 20% for on campus programs, and 10% for various other tasks.
