Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County, the original site of the state's peach industry. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area.
Job Summary: The Farm Worker II is responsible for plowing, planting, spraying, harvesting research plots, maintaining farm equipment and buildings. The worker will also serve as a resource to research staff, students and other farm staff on farming practices such as hay cutting, servicing equipment and working with animals, feeding livestock.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist researchers in laying out plots
- Plant and harvest of various crops
- Take soil samples
- Scout the field for weeds and insects
- Calibrate field equipment
- Apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizer
- Pick up supplies from vendors
- Assist in repair and maintenance of farm equipment
- Assist in training students in farming practices
- Perform other duties assigned
Qualifications
Minimum:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two years working on a farm with row crops, large and small ruminants
- Working knowledge of welding, carpentry, planting, combining and backhoe operations
- Possess mechanical skills to perform maintenance and repairs, on tractors, combines, mowers and other farm equipment
- Valid driver's license

Working conditions:
Full time 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday; occasional weekend work may be required
- Work is primarily done outdoors
- Operate and drive state vehicles
Physical requirements:
- Heavy lifting, climbing, kneeling
- Exposure to different chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizer)
