Laboratory Safety Technician, Environmental Health & Safety Georgetown University

Laboratory Safety Technician, Environmental Health & Safety - Georgetown University

Georgetown's Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) is comprised of highly-trained professionals who partner with faculty, students, and staff to continually promote environmental stewardship and a culture of safety. We are committed to the collective effort of developing, implementing, and administering comprehensive environmental health and safety services, policies, and procedures throughout the university community.

The Laboratory Safety Technician implements Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies and procedures; participates in University-wide safety programs such as Fire safety, Chemical, Biological, and Radiation safety compliance; provides support to basic science/ clinical laboratories; and performs additional responsibilities - in occupational and laboratory research safety. The position reports to the Sr. Biosafety and Occupational Health Manager.

The Laboratory Safety Technician has duties that include but are not limited to:

General Laboratory and OSHA Compliance
  • Assist laboratories, and facilities with IAQ, ergonomics, biological/chemical waste practices and emergency preparedness
  • Participates in Georgetown University emergency action plans, to include an after-hours response as required
  • Assist in the review of laboratory safety procedures and manuals.
  • Assist with lab decontamination /commissioning activity and posting requirements
  • Assist with biowaste pick-ups and responds to biological spills and implements clean-up plan
  • Support EHS Database system knowledge for hazardous materials - for example, data entry, and report generation


Building and Quarterly Lab Inspections
  • Perform building walk-through inspections and coordination with faculty and shared equipment areas - for example, dark rooms, cold rooms, and tissue culture
  • Submit work orders and track compliance


Fire and Life Safety
  • Assist the Fire Marshall in building fire alarms drills
  • Track and identify fire extinguishers


Radiation Safety
  • Assist with packaging and disposal of radioactive waste
  • Assist with laser surveys and registrations


Qualifications
  • BS degree - in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Health and Safety or relevant field preferred (note: a high school diploma with at least 4 years' relative work experience will be considered)
  • Background in chemical, biological safety with some knowledge of OSHA standards, NIH/CDC, NFPA, and other applicable federal regulations
  • Organizational skills and mission orientation
  • Continuous adherence to identified goals
  • Ability to handle 50 pounds and to walk several hours during a work day
  • Availability and willingness to work after hours for emergency response
