Summary of Duties:

The Deputy Chief of Staff reports directly to the Provost/WSU Pullman Chancellor’s Chief of Staff. The incumbent is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing high-priority projects and initiatives designed to achieve the Pullman campus’ mission and strategic vision; leading and/or co-leading campus efforts, task groups, and initiatives working with and across multiple leadership and support levels; managing day to day campus operations; and leading the communications strategy for the Office of the Pullman Chancellor while coordinating with University Marketing and Communications, campus leadership, and other key stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and three (3) years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified within the project specialty. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public or higher education administration, communication, or related field

  • Five (5) years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities. (Note: a Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.)

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and critical thinking skills; adaptability to meet changing demands.

  • Ability to identify, analyze and address a wide variety of issues and problems in a high-intensity environment.

  • Knowledge of the goals, objectives, structure and operations of a major public university.

  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

  • Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.

  • Superior research, writing, and oral communication.

  • Ability to create, compose, and edit correspondence and other written materials.

  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and work effectively with administrators, academic leadership, faculty, students, community leadership, public officials, funding agencies, and members of the community at large.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
