Position Description:

The School of Art and Design at Texas State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in art education starting Fall 2022. The selected candidate will be expected to be a productive scholar and effective teacher of art education and studio methods. The candidate will teach art education courses leading to the B.F.A. in Studio Art with Teacher Certification in ART EC-12; arts integration courses for non-majors; and, based on program needs, student teacher supervision. Art education faculty also teach advanced courses in their area of specialization. The selected candidate will demonstrate evidence of scholarly excellence, teaching effectiveness, and enthusiasm for collaborating with colleagues in the art education program. Candidates will also be expected to contribute to college, department, and university service. We seek candidates who share our commitment to educational equity, social justice, and the high-quality education of students from systemically marginalized communities. We are interested in diverse applicants who situate their lived experience, research, and professional practice in the context of ethnicity, race, gender identity, multilingualism, the immigrant experience, and social class. Art Education:The program in Art Education prepares students to be teachers of art at all levels of public education. Art Education students at Texas State University earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) focused on the teaching of art and on individual artistic practice. Graduates of the program in Art Education are considered to be among the most qualified candidates for employment in Texas and regularly secure teaching positions across the state. The Art Education program’s goals align with the University’s mission to be "student-centered and dedicated to excellence and innovation in teaching” in the creation and study of art. The Art Education faculty are teachers, researchers and artists who infuse their teaching with research and creative activities. Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or Ed.D. degree in Art Education.
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated experience teaching as instructor of record in art education.
  • A sustained and focused record of peer-reviewed research and publications related to the field of art and art education.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diverse and inclusive learning in teaching and curriculum design.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with how digital technology can be integrated into Art and Art curricula at all levels.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching hybrid and fully online courses in higher education.
  • Successful experience teaching in a variety of formal and informal educational settings, e.g., community colleges, museums, K-12 public schools, and/or other community teaching contexts.
  • Teaching licensure (preferably All-Level Art EC-12), and/or experience in student teacher supervision.
  • Familiarity with performance-based assessment.
  • Record of creative activity/artistic practice
  • Record of teaching studio art courses in higher education as instructor of record.
  • Leadership and/or involvement at the local, national, or international level in the field of Art Education.
  • A research practice immersed in diversity in its many forms and practices.
