SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Assistant Director of Bar Success will work with the Program Director of Bar Success, as well as faculty and staff, to assist students and graduates as they prepare for the bar exam, both as they progress through Law School and after they graduate. In tandem with the Program Director of Bar Success, coordinates and implements school-wide initiatives to improve bar passage, including joint workshops and courses, and meetings with students, graduates, Academic Success professionals and faculty.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with the implementation of bar-preparation services including providing a clearinghouse of bar preparation, collaborating with commercial bar preparation companies to assist students with their bar preparation efforts, working with academic support professionals and faculty to track at-risk students’ preparation for the bar exam and performance on the exam, and providing resources for repeat bar exam takers.
  • Provides group and one-on-one bar exam counseling to students.
  • Reviews and critiques student practice Multistate Essay Exams and Multistate Performance Tests and provides appropriate feedback.
  • With the Program Director, implements and manages a comprehensive program for communicating with students about bar exam requirements in order to assess their preparedness and predict success.
  • With the Program Director, designs and implements a case management and monitoring system for students in each graduating class to track exam performance in all jurisdictions, with particular focus on the Uniform Bar Exam.
  • Assists Program Director with the collection and compilation of a wide-range of data that relates student demographics, participation, and academic achievement to bar performance outcomes.
  • Assists Program Director with analyses of bar exam results (including statistical analyses) and assists with preparation of reports for the law school faculty and the university senior leadership following each exam administration.
  • Manages student crises outside of regular working hours during bar study periods (December, January, and February for February bar exam and May, June, and July for July bar exam).
  • Works with students in the Law Learning Center.
  • Assists individual students and graduates to develop and execute customized study plans and strategies for passing the bar exam.
  • Assists in the creation of individual student plans of study after one-on-one meetings with 2L, 3L, and 4L students as needed.
  • Assists with bar application completion.
  • Assists with completing applications for bar exam accommodations.
  • Assists with filing appeals for denials of applications for bar exam accommodations.
  • Provides instruction in bar preparation workshops.
  • Assists with coordination of instruction and assessments for, or teaches prepared curriculum for, for-credit bar preparation courses and provides feedback on student work product.
  • Assists with the development of web pages and other communications describing bar support program and services.
  • Stays abreast of bar exam developments in Massachusetts and nationally and of developments in the delivery of bar support by law schools.
  • Attends and participates in regional and national bar support professionals’ meetings.
  • Assists Program Director with management of vendors providing services to UMass for bar-exam related contracts, including purchase order and payment processes.
  • Assists Program Director in processing invoices for bar-exam related contracts.
  • Liaises with Student Service personnel, Law Enrollment Center personnel, and academic support staff and faculty to identify at risk students and implement early intervention strategies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Juris Doctor

EXPERIENCE: At least one year of experience providing support to bar takers.

OTHER: Evening and weekend work will be required. Travel will be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage higher educational programs.
  • Knowledge of academic programs pertaining to law school students.
  • Knowledge of educational theories and learning styles/disabilities.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform research and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and be a self-starter, demonstrated initiative.
  • Ability to relate to students, faculty, University personnel, and external constituents.
  • Demonstrated creativity.
  • Ability to follow through.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bar support experience at a Law School
  • Experience working with the Uniform Bar Exam
