Responsibilities This position performs chair-side assisting in all phases of emergency dentistry, pediatric, orthodontic, prosthodontic, limited endodontic, limited oral surgery and periodontics assisting. Other related work will also be requires such as preventative and daily maintenance of dental operatory and equipment, clerical assignments, radiological and receptionist responsibilities. The person in this role also serves as a liaison for patients, staff, students, residents and faculty within the Dental College.
The duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assist dental students, residents and/or faculty in the treatment of patients requiring emergency restorative prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and/or oral surgery; Participate in 4 handed dentistry; Assist chair side with air, water and instruments; Mix various materials as required
  • Assist in the management of difficult problems such as the apprehensive patient and/or the pre-medicated adult; Use organizational; software and assist in appointing patients for follow-up care
  • Assist in the placement of the rubber dam; Prepare local anesthetic syringe; Dispose of all sharps in designated sharps container after patient is dismissed; Use mouth mirror for indirect vision retraction; Gently retract patient's cheek, adjusting mirror position to avoid pressure on oral structures; Perform high volume evacuation
  • Operate dental x-ray equipment to include taking routine and specialized radiographs as requested; Explain purpose of procedure to patient and place protective lead apron
  • Obtain and store dental and special supplies; Ensure assigned operatories are kept clean and stocked; Maintain dental equipment in a clean operative condition on a daily basis; Clean, package and maintain instruments and equipment required including sending to and retrieving from central sterilization as needed for daily production; Ensure ordering and inventory control of supplies, equipment and dental instruments requires for assigned clinics
  • Follow all published guidelines regarding personal protective gear and clinical infection control protocol established by federal, state, Augusta University or Dental College of Georgia policies; Follow the organization's incident reporting protocol in case of medical emergency; Be prepared to perform certain procedures until professional help is available
  • Provide dental assisting services to off-campus sites where dental education/services are performed as needed; This requires personal transportation to and from these sites with mileage reimbursement at prevailing AU rates
  • Required to work ADEX (CRDTS) and mock boards as well as other special board certification exercises throughout the year as needed; This can involve weekend work approximately 4-6 times a year; Assist with fabricating select items for various preclinical courses
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications High School diploma/GED or equivalent from a recognized state or federal accrediting organization with one year experienceORCertified Dental Assistant program to include but not limited to DCG programORAssociate's Degree or higher from an accredited college or universityPreferred Qualifications Graduation from a Dental Assisting program with one years' experience in dental assisting in a general dentistry practice, to include previous experience mixing dental materials, taking x-rays, chair side dental assisting skills/ knowledge in multiple dental disciplines or High School Diploma with five years' experience working as a dental assistant.
  • CPR certified
  • Certified Dental Assistant
  • Training with radiology safety
  • A minimum of one years' previous experience as a dental assistant to include previous experience mixing dental materials, taking x-rays, chair side assisting skills/knowledge in multiple dental disciplines with experience preferably in (Prosthodontic, Esthetic, Endodontic, Pediatric, Orthodontic or Periodontics assisting). Depends on which clinic has the opening.
  • Proficient in understanding and speaking Spanish in a clinical setting.

  • Detailed knowledge of tooth anatomy, able to select and place rubber dam
  • Knowledge of 4 handed dental procedures and chair side dental assisting skills
  • Knowledge of oral bony structure of the face and take diagnostic dental radiographs
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, written and verbal communication skills clamps
  • Knowledge of dental instruments, infection control protocols, equipment, materials and methods
