Description:

The Temerty Faculty of Medicine, Departments of Medicine, Family and Community Medicine and Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto, and the Division of Palliative Care, University Health Network (UHN) are seeking four full-time clinicians with expertise in teaching, research or quality improvement in palliative and/or hospice medicine, to be based at the University Health Network. Two positions are located at the Toronto Western Hospital and Kensington Hospice sites, one at the Toronto General Hospital and one at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The successful candidates must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor. It is expected that the positions will be as follows:

  1. Medical Director for Kensington Hospice: Approximately 70% clinical, and 30% teaching and administrative oversight of the medical hospice portfolio. Clinical care, including call coverage will occur at Kensington Hospice, a residential community hospice increasing from 10 to 19 inpatient beds in Spring 2022, and Toronto Western Hospital consult service that includes MRP bed coverage. Outpatient opportunities are available for interested applicants.
  2. Palliative Care physician located at the Toronto Western Hospital/ Kensington Hospice: Approximately 80% clinical, and 20% teaching and research. Clinical care, including call coverage will occur at Kensington Hospice, a residential community hospice increasing from 10 to 19 inpatient beds in Spring 2022, and Toronto Western Hospital consult and outpatient services that includes MRP bed coverage.
  3. Palliative Care physician located at the Toronto General Hospital: Approximately 80% clinical, and 20% teaching and research. Clinical care includes inpatient consultation service and call coverage.
  4. Palliative Care physician located at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre: Approximately 80% clinical, and 20% teaching and research. Clinical care includes outpatient clinics, inpatient consultation service, palliative care unit and call coverage at this site.

Expected start date for all four positions is July 1, 2022, or as mutually agreed upon.

Overview of Palliative Care Program:

The Division of Palliative Care at the University Health Network spans five sites: Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and our affiliated community partner Kensington Hospice. The interdisciplinary program includes inpatient consultations and MRP coverage, outpatient clinics, an acute palliative care unit and a residential hospice. The Palliative Care program is expanding across all sites, creating a need for additional physician positions.

TWH is expanding its inpatient, outpatient and hospice programs and the Medical Director position is being created to support clinical and academic excellence for these programs. Department members have excellent opportunities for educational and research endeavours within an interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, and social workers, among others. There is protected time for scholarly activities to ensure rewarding, fulfilling career development.

Requirements:
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree or equivalent, have completed training in a recognized palliative medicine postgraduate training program, and have, or be eligible for, licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Responsibilities will include excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research. Candidates should have completed, or be willing to complete, a graduate degree in education or research, or have one or more years of post-residency fellowship.

The successful applicant will foster excellence in Palliative and Hospice Medicine and will have broad clinical and research interests related to palliative care. Advanced training and evidence of scholarship is a requirement for the appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. They should demonstrate academic experience through publications in leading journals and presentations at significant conferences.

Remuneration will be consistent with similar academic positions in Toronto. The successful candidate will be eligible for membership in the University Hospital Palliative Care Practice Plan, through which all earnings will be administered.
