Job Details

Inside Higher Ed, the leading source for news and analysis for the higher education community, is seeking an Audience Development and Social Media Manager to lead and expand our presence on social and news-sharing platforms. This role will grow our audience and enrich our connections with readers, encouraging them to become more engaged and loyal followers of our content.

The manager will work with reporters and editors to bring stories to readers where they are, including on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other platforms. The position, reporting to the Vice President for Digital Product and Content Strategy, will also work closely with our marketing and technology teams to help shape our data-driven audience approaches and the format of our content across platforms.

The ideal candidate has an enthusiasm for growing audiences, connecting with readers and embracing analytics to guide both strategy and immediate action.

The role’s preferred location is the Washington, D.C. area with a hybrid remote/office schedule. The role has the potential to be largely remote for the right profile. The job has Monday through Friday daytime hours with scheduling flexibility. Occasional evening and weekend work is possible in breaking news situations but is expected to be minimal.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Inside Higher Ed’s social presence and reader relationships on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other news-sharing and emerging platforms.
  • Build audience development strategies to grow the reach of our journalism.
  • Focus on building community and converting new audiences into highly engaged and loyal followers.
  • Source or create images to accompany content.
  • Monitor and maintain data and analytics on social and audience performance, reporting results to key editorial and business team members.
  • Research and apply the latest audience development and social posting best practices and share those learnings across the organization.
  • Collaborate with journalists, developers and marketing specialists to improve workflows and coordinate efforts around audience development and content distribution.
  • Gather, analyze and apply reader feedback to improve existing projects.
  • Monitor and moderate user-generated content and reader social media comments and queries.
  • Support new product and content initiatives.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience working in an audience development/social media management role for a brand or major media outlet.
  • Proven experience growing audiences on social accounts, and expertise with what works - and what doesn’t work - on different platforms.
  • Excellent and accurate writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience with experimentation, testing and iterative improvement to find what approaches work best with different audiences.
  • Proficient in analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Chartbeat, Facebook Insights, and Crowdtangle. Experience with Sprout Social and other social listening tools is a plus.
  • Social news judgment and awareness of trending topics.
  • Ability to work in a friendly, collaborative culture while also being able to rapidly respond to urgent deadline-driven news events.
  • Experience or training in journalism or time spent in a newsroom or similar editorial environment is a plus.
