Description:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Florida, College of Medicine, Division of Acute Care Surgery is currently seeking applicants for an open rank, tenure or non-tenure track faculty member.

As a faculty member in the Department of Surgery, you are expected to render clinical care as an intensivist in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) including call duties commensurate with your clinical assignment and on a rotational basis with your colleagues. Your main focus will be the Surgical Critical Care Service patients, with the majority of your clinical weeks being performed in the NeuroMedicine and CardioVascular Tower. You primary clinical goal is provide critical care for Thoracic Surgery, Lung Transplant and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients. In addition, if you wish you can participate in ECMO patient cannulation and coverage and/or lung transplant coverage (i.e. lung harvesting). However, those duties shall not interfere with the expected number of weeks per year of clinical intensivist call. Also, if desired, you may participate in bedside surgical procedures, including but not limited to, percutaneous tracheostomies and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement. Intensive care unit scheduling and evaluations will be determined by the medical and co-medical directors of those units, as well as the directors of the UF Health Critical Care Organization. Similarly, the TCV faculty member who is the medical director of ECMO and lung transplant will be responsible for scheduling and evaluating you for any ECMO or lung transplant responsibilities. Ultimately, all medical directors will report regarding your status to the chief of Acute Care Surgery.

Your educational duties include medical student and resident education rotating on your service. You will also be expected to assist with the teaching of surgical residents through the level-specific, didactic curriculum and medical students through the 3rd year rotation small group sessions. Finally, you will also participate in the training of the Surgical Critical Care, Acute Care Surgery and TCV fellows, as well as all Critical Care Fellows that rotate through your ICU/s.

Significant opportunities are potentially available for clinical, translation or basic science research with the University of Florida Sepsis and Critical Illness Research Center and other Laboratories in the University Department of Surgery.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: This position requires an MD degree or equivalent; board certification or eligibility in general surgery as well having completed a critical care fellowship (board certification or eligibility in surgical critical care). Excellent communication skills and evidence of collaborative work are required.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Successful background in research, including expertise in clinical trials and outcomes research; Positive academic commitment to the education of residents and medical students.
