Professor of Climate, Environmental Justice, Media and Communication

Job Details

The School of Communication at American University seeks an open-rank faculty member to serve as Professor of Climate, Environmental Justice, Media and Communication beginning August 1, 2022 whose work and expertise focuses on public understanding of climate change, environmental justice, and immediate and long-term impact. This encompasses experience in the use of media and communication to frame and advocate for policies and issues associated with climate change and climate misinformation. This expertise thus spans climate, health, and social justice. Women, underrepresented individuals and people with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply.

The job is open to a broad range of applicants, from both academic and professional sectors. The professional fields include applicants with expertise in the communications industries, including investigative and science journalists, strategic communicators, filmmakers, conservationists and social advocates. We welcome applicants with expertise in such realms as: investigative and science journalism, strategic communications and social justice, environmental filmmaking, and media arts. Professional communication experience with environmental justice activism and movements is a plus.

The position may engage with existing AU/SOC initiatives such as The Center for Environmental Filmmaking, the Investigative Reporting Workshop, and the Center for Media & Social Impact. At a time when every corner of the globe is fraught with environmental crises and consequences of deadly pandemics, disproportionately affecting traditionally marginalized populations, and when issues such as climate justice and healthcare top the lists of concerns that inform voters, the School of Communication aims to bring a broader understanding of these issues to our students and to society at large.

Salary and benefits are competitive. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled, subject to on-going budgetary approval. Please submit applications via http://apply.interfolio.com/98800. Include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, recent teaching evaluations, and recent published papers as well as a statement of past and/or future contributions to diversity and inclusion through teaching, research, and service. Please contact Aisha Green, Faculty Coordinator, 202-885-2133 or aisha@american.edu if you have any questions.
