Job summary:

The Senior Associate Athletics Director, Human Resources and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) is the chief human resources and DEI officer for the Department. Under the general supervision of the Executive Associate Athletics Director & CFO (with joint reporting to the Athletics Director for the position's DEI responsibilities), this person will oversee the full range of human resources activities and lead the DEI efforts for the Department in coordination with institutional DEI direction. This person will serve as a member of the Athletics Department Leadership Team and help to set the strategic direction of the department.

Essential job functions:

Human Resources
  • Collaborate with the Athletics Director and other DAPER senior leaders in defining department initiatives by having an excellent understanding of the organization's objectives, issues, needs, and key success factors.
  • Work in close collaboration with University Human Resources (UHR) to ensure strategic alignment, integration/consistency, and standardization.
  • Develop organization-specific human resources policies and practices; set the human resources strategy for planning processes, and actively promote best practices. Identify and analyze trends; make recommendations for changes/improvements.
  • Design and lead strategies for facilitating organizational and behavioral change. Make recommendations on organizational design and development issues.
  • Investigate complex employee relations issues and initiate appropriate resolution; recommend and facilitate effective solutions in alignment with applicable policies and laws; assess risk to the organization and identify compliance issues.
  • Coach and advise staff on organizational, employee, and labor relations issues.
  • Participate in setting organizational objectives and goals, and design performance appraisal processes for organization.
  • Work collaboratively to identify, direct, and/or deliver the training and development planning for individuals and groups.
  • Direct talent management program (recruitment and staffing plans and retention) and provide effective recruitment methods for assigned areas. Structure complex offers; support or lead high level and complex searches.
  • Manage DAPER's salary-setting program; advise managers on assignment of employees to appropriate grades; design incentive and bonus programs.
  • Oversee processes for workers' compensation, disability, leave, workplace accommodation requests, and health and safety issues; inform managers as needed. Act as a resource to others in organization and oversee the accurate documentation and retention of recordkeeping.
  • Oversee and approve human resources transactions submitted for processing. Prepare reports and analyze data available through local and centralized database resources.
  • Manage the performance of direct reports. Set team objectives, priorities, and resources to align with department objectives.
  • Assist with other duties as necessary and assigned.


Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Guide and provide strategic direction for the department's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategies. Manage DEI projects focused on employees, education and resources, community and communications, and student-athletes.
  • Enhance and align current diversity, equity and inclusion programs, while also developing new strategies. Serve as a thought leader, advisor and designer of practices in support of the DAPER staff diversity, equity and inclusion vision, strategy and programs.
  • Oversee and enhance comprehensive DEI strategy for DAPER coaches and staff. Continuously enrich diversity practices and embed in all related processes.
  • Assess current systems and culture within each functional area. Ensure the adoption of consistent practices, coordinate implementation activities, and optimize resources.
  • Be a content expert on DEI. Partner with University Human Resources to identify new efforts and/or improvements to realize the DEI vision and goals; ensure practices are embedded in all elements of employee lifecycle -- talent attraction, onboarding, development, engagement, retention, employee relations, communication, and compensation and benefits.
  • Collaborate with the Student-Athlete Development unit and university Student Affairs to ensure alignment of initiatives between staff, coaches and student-athletes.
  • Coordinate with Stanford's IDEAL initiative, University Human Resources' IDEAL Engage initiative, the Office for Inclusion, Belonging and Intergroup Communication (IBIC) and other Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Equity professionals within the university on the development and deployment of strategies and tactics.
  • Partner with UHR and Communications to develop and lead a communication strategy and plan highlighting DAPER DEI vision, goals, efforts, testimonials, etc., for both internal and external audiences and potential candidates in the recruitment process.
  • Develop meaningful metrics, tools and analytics that enable leadership to track progress, provide accountability, and evaluate diversity and inclusion performance and effectiveness.
  • Work with other DAPER senior staff to ensure diversity efforts are part of our everyday practice and culture.


To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree (required), master's degree (preferred) and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, including previous management of large-scale DEI efforts.
  • Demonstrated experience as a consultant and advisor to senior management in all human resources areas, including: employee relations, employment and labor law, compensation, staffing and employment, training and development, performance coaching and management, and organizational development.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and understanding of group dynamics. Successful track record of establishing credibility and trust with a diverse client group, including senior leaders. Demonstrated leadership skills and management courage.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, creative problem solving, judgment, negotiating, influencing, and strategic decision making skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise on and implement organizational change. Demonstrated end-to-end experience in the development and execution of organization-wide initiatives.
  • Excellent facilitation and oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports and deliver formal presentations or training to senior management and other audiences.
  • Strong supervision/management and staff development experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite and human resource information systems.
  • Ability to strike the right balance between managing, coaching, rolling up your sleeves, and leading by example.
  • Demonstrated passion for intercollegiate athletics.
  • Strong work ethic consistent with department needs and culture.
