Job Description

Under the general direction of the Manager, Groundskeeping, the Irrigation Repairer, Senior is a member of the Landscaping Team. The Irrigation Repairer, Senior works closely with other Facility Services trades and the students and staff of NAU.

This is journey level classification. This classification inspects work, designs and lays out automated lawn sprinkler systems, and has responsibility for entering data into computer for programming daily schedules. Purpose of this classification: designs, programs, repairs, installs and maintains automated underground lawn sprinkler and drip irrigation systems.

This position exists to aid and advise the Manger in fulfilling the Facility Services’ mission to the University by practicing sustainable maintenance and operations methods, ensuring clean, healthy and safe campus environments, providing superior customer service to the Campus community, adopting industry best practices, and empowering the workforce.

Irrigation System Knowledge and Maintenance - 30%

  • Programs Calsense computer for daily automated sprinkler schedules.
  • Maps irrigation systems for campus-wide master plans using a computerized system
  • Troubleshoots electronic systems, irrigation controllers, solenoid valves, and heads of all types.
  • Responsible for other irrigation activities including installing or repairing heads, lines, valves, clocks, troubleshooting, mapping systems for both popup and drip systems, removes old systems and recovers reusable equipment.
  • Performs annual inspections of backflow preventers and documents results.
  • Responsible for blue staking irrigation systems as requested.
  • Plans and develops work schedules, equipment usage schedules and procedures for equipment maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools as required.
  • Performs routine daily maintenance on all equipment. Includes washing/cleaning, checking and adding oil, and fluids.

Irrigation planning and coordination - 30%

  • Designs new and complex irrigation systems or may redesign old irrigation systems.
  • Scheduling and coordinating irrigation and watering activities as required in assigned area.
  • Maintains accurate landscape drawings manually or on computer design system; maintains accurate records of water usage to maximize water efficiency.
  • Operates tractors and trenchers to install lines
  • Coordinates with electrician, telecommunications staff and other appropriate departments/outside contractors in the design, installation, and repairs of automated underground lawn sprinkler systems
  • Will be required to work with other departments on projects.
  • Takes a proactive role in promoting and supporting Facility Services mission and vision.

Facility Services Support - 15%

  • Removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks, and entryways as required; may operate snow removal equipment.
  • Assist in trimming and pruning a variety of trees and shrubs, as required.
  • Removes campus litter and empties litter barrels.

Customer Services and Administration - 10%

  • Provides superior customer service to the campus community.
  • Provides detailed, and accurate reports for work completed- will involve daily work logs.
  • Maintains labor and cost records and requisitions materials, supplies and equipment as required.
  • Record time and materials for customer billing

Training and Safety Practices - 10%

  • Participates in job-related training. May be required to attend out-of-town seminars.
  • Inspects work of assigned personnel and recommends corrective measures to meet established standards.
  • Provide training and assists in providing orientation to any assigned employees.
  • Responsible for securing all equipment at the end of shift, removing tools and equipment from trucks and placing in proper storage.
  • Ensures all trucks and equipment are locked and secured upon end of shift.
  • May be required to work in the proximity to hazardous materials and is expected to work safely
  • Complies with all OSHA regulations.
  • Performs all job duties in compliance with NAU safety policies and procedures.

Other duties as assigned - 5%

  • May be required to work with other departments on projects.
  • May Assist Heavy Equipment Operators in the completion of various landscaping projects.
  • May assist Moving Department in completion of moving furniture and event setups.

Essential Physical Requirements and Work Hazards

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Minimum Qualifications
    High school degree AND1-3 years of relevant experience ORAny combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
    3-5 years of underground lawn sprinkler system repair and installation experience which includes one year of sprinkler system design and inspection experience ORCertification in irrigation and/or water systems.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    Knowledge of manual, computerized, centralized, and/or satellite irrigation systems.Knowledge of hand and electrical tools, as well as larger machinery.Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.Records maintenance.Develops and maintains good working relationships.Coordination of activities and establishing priorities.Basic computer skills for recording time.Communicates effectively.Understands and follows specific instructions and procedures.Performs irrigation tasks such as operate timers, clocks, and controls for sprinklers.Installs, operates, troubleshoots, and repairs manual and/or computerized irrigation systems.Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary range is $31,320-$39,150. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.


This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents.
