The Department of Elementary and Special Education in the College of Education invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Elementary Science Education. The home campus for this position will be the Statesboro campus, and some travel may be required to the Armstrong and Liberty campuses.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Elementary and Special Education, the Assistant Professor of Elementary Science Education position focuses on teaching, scholarship, and service. Teaching responsibilities focus on teaching science education methods courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervising teacher candidates in both the department's traditional campus-based undergraduate program (local K-5 public school classrooms) and our fully-online MAT program in Elementary Education. The teaching requires the modeling of effective instructional practices for diverse student populations and the use of instructional technology in face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning environments. This position also requires the engagement in a cohesive scholarship agenda with expectations to present and disseminate work at the state and national level. In addition, the position involves collaborating with faculty across the College of Education both in terms of scholarship and performing service to the department, college, University, regional schools, and professional community. The position is a 10-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in Elementary Education, Science Education, Early Childhood Education, Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Science Education, or a closely related field, by August 1, 2022, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in science content and/or science pedagogy.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in grades P-12.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the department, college, and University.
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with a diverse faculty and teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students in public school and/or post-secondary settings.
  • Demonstrated development and implementation of pedagogy for teacher candidates to demonstrate ability to effectively work with diverse students and their families and to apply content in developing equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse P-12 students.
  • Experience teaching science in grades P-8, especially P-5, in a U.S. public school setting.
  • Experience teaching science education courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Experience in the supervision of pre-service teacher candidates and/or practicum students in field placements.
  • Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in using technology in instruction, particularly in online and/or hybrid settings.
  • Experience with school-university partnerships; and involvement in professional educational organizations at the local, state, or national levels.

    Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
  • All work for Georgia Southern University must be completed while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia, unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific purpose and limited period of time within current policy.
  • Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus
  • Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
