Senior Associate Director of Admissions for Diversity and Access

PURPOSE: This position plays a significant role in the planning and oversight of the office of Enrollment Management’s efforts to identify, recruit, evaluate, and enroll students who have been historically under-represented in higher education, working closely with the VP of Enrollment Management and Director of Enrollment Management. Primary responsibilities also include expanding partnerships with schools and community-based organizations highlighting diverse student populations. Coordinate relevant efforts across the campus to promote a diverse representation in the entering classes. As a member of the Admissions leadership team, this position works collaboratively with Enrollment Management leadership assisting in the creation and interpretation of policy and support ongoing professional development efforts in the area of DEI. This position involves recruitment travel, extensive application review, and active participation in programs and yield events, both on and off campus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in the development and management of a comprehensive recruitment strategy to increase applications from diverse populations for both the University of Maine campus and the University of Maine, Machias campus.
  • Develop relationships with affinity groups and community-based organizations to aid in diversity recruitment and enrollment growth. Strengthen their level of confidence and willingness to promote the University of Maine as an opportunity for prospective students.
  • Manage dedicated diversity and access recruitment budget of $100,000.
  • Responsible for extensive public engagement work for reputational enhancement of the University of Maine and University of Maine, Machias.
  • Lead development, implementation, and coordination efforts to increase applications and yield from diverse populations (racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, geographic, first-generation, socioeconomic, rural, veteran, military students, etc.).
  • Represent the University at high school visits, college nights, college fairs, transfer days, on-campus interviews and on and off-campus open houses, accepted student days, receptions and orientations. This position involves significant travel both in Maine and outside of Maine in the fall and spring.
  • Plan and arrange both physical and virtual recruitment travel visits.
  • Create and sustain strong relationships with offices across the campus that represent diverse populations to enhance communications and participation.
  • Participate in on-campus and off-campus recruitment events to include open houses, accepted student days, new student orientation, welcome weekend.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Enrollment Management planning and facilitating workshops in DEI. (The President’s Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion)
  • Review and make decisions regarding admissibility of applicants to the University and assist other admission staff members with the evaluation of applicants.
  • Assist with the development of electronic recruitment initiatives including website presence, e-mail campaigns, web-based responses to mailings, facilitated chat rooms, bulletin boards, and on-line communities.
  • Support the University’s overall recruitment goals with respect to the size and make-up of the first-year and transfer classes paying specific attention to out-of-state, multi-cultural and academically excellent populations.
  • Prepare written reports relevant to admissions, recruitment, and related activities.
  • Make decisions concerning travel expenses and manage a university purchasing card.
  • Manage and evaluate budget for special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in professional meetings commensurate with the duties of this position. Such activities include workshops, seminars and professional development meetings.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
  • Utilize coaching and mentoring methods which provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.
  • Commit to organizational improvements by identifying opportunities to improve, and recommending possible alternatives for a situation.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
