Position Description:

The Division of Liberal Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) invites applications for two full-time undergraduate faculty positions beginning on August 1, 2022. We are looking for colleagues with expertise and teaching experience in one (or more) of the following focus areas: 1) Arts or Social Entrepreneurship, Arts Management, and/or cultural sector leadership; 2) a STEM discipline including, but not limited to, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or Computer Science; and 3) a Social Science field including, but not limited to, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, or Political Science. School/Department Information:

UNCSA is part of the seventeen-campus University of North Carolina system and is located in Winston-Salem—a growing, dynamic, multicultural community of about 250,000 people. UNCSA educates artists in a four-year program that culminates in a BFA or BM degree in one of five arts schools: Design & Production, Dance, Filmmaking, Music, and Drama.

As an integral part of each of these degree programs, the Division of Liberal Arts (DLA) offers a curriculum that contributes to our undergraduate students’ cultural and intellectual growth. We offer a core curriculum that provides students with the opportunity to enhance their perspectives on themselves as individuals and their relation to diverse historical and cultural contexts, and to develop the habits of mind and communication skills essential to becoming tomorrow’s influential, socially engaged arts professionals. We also design and teach elective courses and minors, including an Arts Entrepreneurship minor, of particular relevance for undergraduate students of the arts. Current DLA faculty have diverse specialties in history, the humanities, foreign languages, literature, philosophy, psychology and the natural sciences, but we all contribute to the general education program in a teaching-intensive context.

Successful candidates will have an enthusiasm for teaching in an arts-oriented environment including a desire to teach courses within our core curriculum. They will undertake responsibilities typical of such a position in an academic setting, including participating in academic advising; evaluating students on a regular basis; submitting grades; attending faculty meetings, retreats and other meetings deemed necessary by the Dean; attending to all duties associated with a full-time faculty appointment as described in the UNCSA Faculty Manual; teaching assigned courses; holding office hours; participating in UNCSA and DLA committees as needed; engaging in the development of new and existing programs; participating in other work-related duties assigned by the Dean.

Required Qualifications:

The qualified candidate must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree with at least eighteen graduate credit hours in an academic field at time of hire; or an equivalent combination of education, teaching, and professional experience.

Other required qualifications include relevant teaching experience; a record of creative, scholarly, or professional achievement; an ability to think across disciplines; excellent interpersonal skills; a commitment to divisional and institutional service; an ability to design courses relevant to students of the fine and performing arts.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience and/or interest in: a variety of pedagogical methods, technologies and modalities; working with diverse student populations; creative interdisciplinary collaborations; and incorporating ongoing creative and scholarly activity in course design and implementation.

Tenure Information:
