JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut, Student Health and Wellness on the Storrs campus is looking for an Insurance Authorization Specialist to coordinate and provide assistance in carrying out the accurate and timely pre-authorization/authorization of insurance coverage and benefits for students requiring a medical referral. Provides administrative support for the clinical ancillary areas, including pharmacy, phlebotomy, and radiology.

This position provides specialized insurance authorization for medical referral services, as well as specialized inventory management for ancillary areas. Incumbents in this position are expected to resolve a variety of problems within known practice and are expected to occasionally resolve new, unusual or difficult problems which require judgment and initiative. The primary focus of the job is on the insurance authorization, but may occasionally include other administrative duties.

This position reports to Director of Fiscal and Business Operations at Student Health and Wellness. Works directly with the Pharmacy Manager and Medical Office Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for coordinating all aspects of the pre-authorization/authorization process, including ensuring the appropriate and timely processing of paperwork and/or health records.
  2. Reviews each case for accuracy, completeness and compliance with regulations, policies and procedures.
  3. Obtains insurance information from students and determines if authorization is necessary for the services that are needed. Confirms insurance coverage and communicates benefits to patients.
  4. Collects all the necessary medical information required for approval and contacts the insurance company involved.
  5. Communicates effectively with clinicians, insurance payers and clients to facilitate the business process and insurance/authorization process. Sound understanding of all authorization procedures to assist clinicians in getting treatment plans to insurance companies within the guidelines of the authorization process.
  6. Works collaboratively with the clinical providers to understand medical necessity requirements and medical coding, such as CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  7. Works with providers which patients are referred to, to obtain office notes/test results, etc. and will send a task to referring provider.
  8. Provides support to the Business Office to ensure the correct funding sources will be billed.
  9. Excellent customer service, verbal, and written skill is necessary to communicate with patients, insurance representatives and providers.
  10. Transmits authoritative information and serves as a resource regarding policies and procedures relating to the clinical ancillary areas and the authorization administrative functions, with the responsibility to occasionally interpret such policies and procedures.
  11. Regularly communicates with other University offices and/or outside agencies to request or provide information or to clarify procedures.
  12. In clinical ancillary areas, reviews operating procedures for efficiency and effectiveness and recommends changes for improvements. May participate in planning and decision making regarding new or changed procedures.
  13. Develops or supervises the maintenance and coordination of filing systems, and computerized records/data system.
  14. Performs routine administrative functions for clinical ancillary areas. Also may help with planning and carrying out related support activities, such as meetings, conferences, interviews, processing purchase orders, checking inventories, and confirming payments.
  15. Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience in a medical office setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical office practices.
  • The ability to independently solve task-related problems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Excel, Word, Microsoft office, and at least one medical software.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information effectively.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues in the delivery of clinical services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of medical coding.
  • Three to five years of experience in a medical office setting.
APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month position with an anticipated start date by December 2021 or earlier. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
