The University of Colorado Denver seeks individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment.  We value the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.

The Department of Integrative Biology has an opening for a full-time tenure-track faculty member in Physiology at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department seeks a colleague who studies physiological systems and processes at multiple levels of biological organization and the emergence of systems-level properties. Ideal candidates are those who can develop diversity-based, equity serving programming in research involving innovative approaches to research problems and can obtain funding to support that research. The ideal candidate will also be a contributor to our teaching mission involving classroom instruction and mentoring. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated record of commitment to inclusion and equity of under-represented individuals in STEM, as we believe these traits strengthen our academic community.

CU Denver graduates gain the powerful combination of immersive classroom and real-world experience that are in demand today. The city benefits from well-educated, top talent and a new generation of knowledge that fuels the future of Denver and our region. We are CU in the City.

CU Denver offers more than 100 degree programs, from the bachelor’s to the doctoral level, in the heart of downtown. Here, more than 15,000 students pursue academic programs that range from global energy management to music industry studies to criminal justice. As part of the state’s largest public university system, CU Denver is a major contributor to the Colorado economy, with nearly 2,500 employees and annual economic impact of $800 million.  Read CU Denver Quick Facts here.

Position Emphasis:

The Biology Major is the largest undergraduate program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, serving approximately 2,000 undergraduates and emphasizing basic knowledge in biology ranging from cell and molecular biology, organismal biology, to ecology and evolution, as well as the development of skill sets in the scientific method, critical thinking, and technical writing. Our Ph.D. and Master's programs in Integrative and Systems Biology encourage multi-disciplinary faculty participation from across the CU Denver Campus, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Competitive applicants will contribute to the CU Denver and the Department of Integrative Bioilogy mission to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM education. Our student body of 15,000 is diverse: for our undergraduates, 49% are first-generation students, 52% percent are women, 42% are students of color. CU Denver qualifies for both Hispanic Serving (HSI) and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving (AANAPISI) status. CU Denver is also listed on G.I. Jobs "Military Friendly Schools" list. CU Denver is a member of The National Science Foundation's Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation, and a recipient of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Inclusive Excellence Grant for enhancing equity in STEM education. Diversity and inclusion are embedded in all aspects of campus life, described further at: http://www.ucdenver.edu/about/departments/odi/diversitymatters.

The successful candidate will establish an independent, externally funded research program involving our students in the area of physiology. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose research programs utilize contemporary cellular and molecular approaches in their research program, and who are open to collaboration with existing faculty. Ideally, teaching responsibilities will support undergraduates in molecular, cellular, and organismal fields (e.g., Human Physiology, Human Anatomy, Immunology, and Cell Biology), as well as upper division or graduate level courses in the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate is also expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. This position is on the downtown Denver campus. It is a 9 month academic appointment with 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service expectations.

We encourage scientists with a broad range of physiology-related research questions and systems to apply. Both comparative study systems and model systems such as mice (BSL-1), fish, frogs, worms, flies, yeast, or cultured cells would be appropriate, and ideally should complement current faculty interests.
