04-Nov-2021 Close All Job SummaryThe Department of Art and Art History at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a specialist in African Diasporic / African American visual studies for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in the Fall 2022. We welcome applications from candidates whose research incorporates Critical Theory, interdisciplinary perspectives, and object-based studies on cross-cultural issues. Preference will be given to those with Ph.D. or equivalent in hand, as well as teaching experience and publications. Teaching load is two courses per semester, with opportunities for curriculum development in our undergraduate and graduate programs, including the Department’s new PhD program in Arts of the Americas. In addition, the appointee will mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise theses and dissertations, and mentor the next generation of scholars and teachers in their field of expertise.

The appointee will also have the opportunity to work with faculty, staff, and students across a number of university units, including CU Art Museum, Centers for African American Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Latin American Studies, and Humanities and the Arts. Regional resources include a vibrant array of museums including the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, among others. Who We AreThe Department of Art and Art History occupies a 170,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility, the Visual Arts Complex located at the heart of the CU campus near downtown Boulder. With nearly 500 undergraduate art majors and minors and 50 graduate students, the department is a vibrant community of students, artists, and scholars.
Faculty members are highly active in their respective fields, from publishing important articles and books on theory and historical to contemporary art, to presenting their research in national and international conferences, exhibiting in galleries and museums, and participating in film and video festivals, as well as establishing non-traditional artist venues and opportunities. The faculty are also committed teachers and mentors who work closely with both undergraduate and graduate students, helping them to realize their individual visions as artists and art historians.
The department offers BA, BFA, MA, and PhD degrees in art history and the MFA degree in art practices. The PhD in Arts of the Americas, which focuses on cross-cultural issues in the arts and historically underrepresented groups in world history. The art history program has specialists in Native American, Latin American, and Asian art history.
CU-Boulder is a major AAU public research university that sits upon the land within the territories of the Ute and Arapaho peoples. We honor Chief Left Hand (Nawath), leader of the last Hinóno'éí band to spend their winters in the Boulder Valley.What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeThe position is critical for adding to our program’s need for teaching and researching issues in Critical Race Theory, Cultural Theory, Black/African/Diasporic Studies, as well as Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies and will contribute to both undergraduate and graduate education and mentorship. What We Can Offer

The salary range is $72,000 - $76,000.

• Must have acquired a Ph.D. in Art History or related field by August 1, 2022.

What You Will Need

• An art historian who specializes in African and Diasporic visual studies.
• Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students, direct theses of MA and Ph.D. students, and oversee honors undergraduate theses.

What We Would Like You To Have

• At least two years teaching experience; graduate teaching experience may be included in those two years.
• Demonstrate a strong research agenda and maintain professional standing in your field.
• Trained in an object-based approach to African Diasporic/African American art.
