Description:

The Department of Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in Urban Planning in the City Studies Program. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have a PhD in Planning or a cognate discipline at the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Applicants will have a research focus in planning studies and one or more of the following areas: planning for healthy and sustainable cities and suburbs; planning for equity and inclusion; participation and collaboration in planning processes; planning for racial and climate justice and resilience; and building and maintaining planning partnerships. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching, and be able to communicate effectively as an undergraduate and graduate teacher.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program to complement and augment the existing scholarly profile of City Studies at University of Toronto Scarborough. This hire in Urban Planning will contribute to the existing and emerging areas of scholarly excellence identified in the University of Toronto Scarborough Strategic Plan, such as the advancement of research in resilient and inclusive suburbs and ecosystems; equity, diversity and inclusion; sustainability; and healthy communities. The successful candidate must have an emerging record of scholarly accomplishment and provide evidence of excellence in research, as demonstrated by publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals and/or with leading academic presses, or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, and strong endorsements by referees of high international standing.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching and emerging excellence as a graduate supervisor through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the Canadian context. Demonstrated commitment to experiential learning is an asset. Candidates are also expected to provide evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and to the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as demonstrated through the application materials.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach large introductory and senior undergraduate courses in the City Building Concentration of the interdisciplinary City Studies programs in the Department of Human Geography. City Studies is engaged with understanding pressing urban social and policy issues facing us in the 21st Century.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The appointment is in the Department of Human Geography at University of Toronto Scarborough. The successful candidate also will become a member of the tri-campus graduate department of Geography and Planning, and will teach and supervise graduate students in that department.
