Ion Beam Materials Laboratory (IBML) Lab Manager - Materials Science & Engineering

Regular, Full-time, Market Range 08

This position is for a full-time operator or operations manager, depending on experience, for the Ion Beam Materials Laboratory in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Tennessee.  The successful candidate will have responsibilities for day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Ion Beam Materials Laboratory to ensure safe operation of the ion sources, accelerator, beam lines and endstations. The candidate is expected to make decision on routine repair/replacement parts, modest upgrades, and endstation modifications to improve effectiveness and usage.

The candidate will assist with allocating beam time to users, maintaining an experimental schedule and designing user experiments. In addition, the candidate will be expected to maintain records of usage, assist in the training/supervision of undergraduate/graduate students, post doctoral researchers, and visiting scholars. Depending on experience and training, the candidate will conduct or assist with routine ion beam analysis and implantation for users.

Additionally, the candidate will also be part of an integrated research team and will support and participate in ongoing research projects that are conducted at the Ion Beam Materials Laboratory.  Other duties may include contributing to publication of research in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at ion-beam related technical conferences, and assistance in the development of proposals for new research projects.



Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, or Physics, or related field with at least 5 years of experience in maintenance and operation of an ion accelerator laboratory is required.

A Master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, or Physics, or related field with 5 years of experience in maintenance and operation of an ion accelerator laboratory and 3 years of experience in ion beam analysis is preferred.
