Job Summary

Guide, develop, design, and communicate programs in an integrated way for Career Services.

Work closely with the offices of the Dean of the College, and the communications team to develop, implement, and assess a strategic, integrated communications plan that raises the visibility and effectiveness of career services and increases/enhances student experience and engagement.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Essential Functions

Lead, develop, manage, and assess communication projects:

Create successful and impactful practices to engage students across the four years.

Evaluate needs, develop, and implement a range of communication projects that serve to inform and engage the Smith student community. Serve as a manager of communications operations, oversee short and long-term planning and maintain policies and procedures.

Create marketing and communication materials for use in print, web, multimedia, and social media. Maintain an archive of text, photo, and video content. Generate ideas for communications which create interest in, and effectively promote the Career Center by proactively seeking out and highlighting the activities, accomplishments, and awards of students.

Assess student engagement and satisfaction particularly with integrated learning centers and career services.

Manage a communications calendar, set realistic production schedules, and work with media specialists to ensure high quality production of promotional and informational materials. Coordinate social media outlets to increase exposure and engagement with users. Set and meet consistently high standards across all channels; web, print publications, and media programs.

Develop, write and coordinate content for distribution across multiple channels:

Track DOC activities, innovations, and student experiences and write news stories, articles for the DOC web site and other promotional outlets.

Review and maintain time-sensitive material to ensure that online content is current and accurate.

Collaborate with College Relations and ITS to ensure that the DOC website and other materials are in keeping with college policies and standards and aligned with design architecture principles.

Develop web site content and apply a user-oriented perspective to the process.

Other Functions

Respond to user inquiries, comments and suggestions. Keep current with emerging and best practices in writing for the web, social media trends, and web usability. Train staff on communications policies and best practices.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors showing adaptability and flexibility to accomplish goals.

As a member of the Dean's Office staff, work in a team environment that supports the Smith College mission. Roles may include: leading working groups on specific projects, serving as coordinator of projects or outreach activities, writing reports for work across the DOC, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

Bachelor's degree plus three to five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience; web design and assessment experience. Ability to work independently. Ability to engage and communicate with college students.

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Marketing, public relations or communications experience in a non-profit strongly preferred.

Skills

  • Demonstrated strong creative, communication, organizational, writing, and editing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex tasks with short time frames; maintain ongoing communications calendar.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the maintenance of website content and website design, including content management systems such as Drupal.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience designing press-ready print materials and photo-manipulation software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience producing video and audio for posting and/or broadcast using video equipment and multimedia capture and editing software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with current media technology, social media strategies, and online marketing.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships and work collaboratively with staff from other departments (e.g., IT and College Relations) as well as with vendors and outside service providers.
