The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applicants for two tenured or tenure-track open rank faculty positions under a joint “Data Analytics at Scale” cluster search in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and School of Data Science. These positions are expected to commence in August 2022.

Many organizations and research laboratories now collect massive amounts of data. However, most of them are not yet able to extract sufficient meaning and actionable information from their data. For this reason, organizations large and small have turned to large-scale computing (cloud and/or high-performace computing (HPC). This requires a combination of advanced analytics, data driven decision making, and large-scale computing applied to cutting-edge problems facing a wide range of domains. Data science working “at scale” explores the policy and ethical questions relevant to organizations looking to successfully extract knowledge from massive data sets, at large volumes, with high velocities, and with an appropriate balance between privacy and utility. Effective analysis of organizationally relevant, large-scale data sets in large-scale computer environments to solve real-world problems is an outstanding opportunity for high-impact research and education. In particular, cloud and HPC computing has become essential for both cutting edge research and for the operations of organizations both big and small. Extant computing challenges mean research opportunities in cloud and HPC systems for data management, including new software mechanisms to better coordinate processing and data-distribution across geographically distributed services, distributed databases and database semantics, and fundamental advances in data science methods and data visualization for datasets that can only be processed at exabyte scales. Data analytics at scale also poses important social and public policy research questions concerning new safety and ethical policies, pursued in close collaboration with technologists, users, and policy experts.

The UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science is proud of its strong, collegial and innovative culture built by students, faculty, staff and alumni who are dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge and demonstrating engineering leadership. The School also has undergone a tremendous period of growth and transformation over the past six years, with historic increases in research funding, faculty positions, graduate program enrollment and learning opportunities for students, now within the context of a leading comprehensive public university. The School is strongly committed to interdisciplinary education and research, as evidenced by unique intiatives such as the Link Lab.

The UVA School of Data Science – UVA’s 12th school was the first school of data science in the US and founded in 2019 with the largest gift in the university’s history. It position the University as a global leader in efforts to improve society through teaching and research based on the powerful, emerging field of data science and with a mantra of a “School without Walls” it builds upon a foundation set in place at UVA by the Data Science Institute (DSI), a pan-University institute established in 2013 that grants graduate degrees . The School of Data Science is developing new undergraduate, doctoral, and certificate programs, helping to meet soaring demand for qualified data science professionals in a field that plays a key role in the global information-based economy.

Thus, the UVA School of Data Science and School of Engineering and Applied Science are actively seeking strong faculty candidates who will excel in research, teaching and service in one or more of the following areas:

1. Large Scale Algorithms for Data Analytics: Foundational machine learning, statistics, operations research, unstructured data, social and digital media, game theory, mechanism design, and learning theory.

2. Cloud and HPC Scale Data Intensive Applications: Infrastructure design, data management and supporting architectures, dynamic resource allocation and scheduling, design of hybrid cloud architectures, hybrid mobile/cloud computing, and collaborative methods for cloud federations.

3. Human Computer Interaction and Social Issues in Cloud and HPC Computing: Transparency, interpretability, accountability, privacy, fairness, and safety of machine learning and data analytics. We will be particularly interested in hires doing research in these areas for data at scale, where deficient designs, bad behavior, and poor policies can expose enterprises to serious and possibly catastrophic outcomes.

4. Large Scale Engineering System Design Driven by Data Analytics: Next-generation design and modeling of modern engineering systems which use machine-based learning over massive data sets along with digital twins to augment traditional design approaches that rely on human experience, first-principles, and physics-based generation of features.

Candidates must have earned or be on track to earn a PhD in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment. Candidates must have a record, appropriate to their rank, of excellence in research in applications of data science such as those above to problems in appropriate domain(s). A demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence is required. Evidence of an explicit commitment and activities promoting diversity and advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups is essential. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching and a proven national reputation. Faculty rank will be dependent on academic qualifications and years of experience.

Appointments in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and/or the School of Data Science, with the potential for joint or courtesy appointments, as appropriate, in various UVA Schools and Departments, are all possibilities. Duties will include conducting primary research, teaching, mentoring and advising students, and service to the school and university. In addition to their home unit(s), the new faculty members are strongly encouraged to foster collaborations with faculty and students in the other 9 schools.

The “At Scale” hires will have full access to the UVA advanced computing infrastructure, virtual and distributed computing, and AWS/Azure cloud resources. This means these hires will have the infrastructure for success from the time they arrive. More broadly these hires will become part of a distinctive pan-University community focused on computation, data analytics, system design, and data stewardship, anchored jointly between the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Data Science. This community provides the ability to leverage activities in data science across all the schools and this new cluster will both benefit from this community and contribute to it. These hires will also be able to benefit from activities already established such as the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics and the Link Lab (Engineering) and the Collaboratory for Educational Analytics and the Collaboratory for Applied Data Science in Business (Data Science).

Organization

In 1819, the University of Virginia established a new model for intellectual exchange and cross-disciplinary collaboration in higher education. Two hundred years later, as a major research institution, we continue to challenge conventions, lead with ingenuity and advance knowledge for the common good.

What began as an innovative idea has become one of the nation’s leading public research universities, with over 21,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UVA also has over 3,000 full-time faculty offering more than 400 degrees.

Each of the University’s eleven schools has its own distinctive mission, working together to garner consistently high rankings—including #2 Best Value Public College (Princeton Review, 2016), #3 Public University in the Nation (U.S. News & World Report, 2016), and #3 Best Value Among Public Colleges (Kiplinger’s, 2016).

As we invest in and strengthen our research capabilities, UVA seeks new faculty ready to uncover new insights, rewrite old rules and collaborate on intellectual discoveries.

RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS THAT CROSS DISCIPLINES

As an R1 institution, the University’s research centers, consortia and laboratories are on the leading edge of discovery and technology, offering collaborative spaces for students and faculty to solve global problems.

Our professors are recognized members of major national scholarly and professional organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Our faculty’s engagement in interdisciplinary research is being facilitated by new research institutes specializing in everything from big data to brain functioning, and by cluster hires across schools.

NATIONALLY RANKED HEALTH SYSTEM

UVA is also home to a nationally renowned academic medical center and the UVA Health System, which serves a three-part mission to treat patients, conduct translational research and train medical practitioners in a wide variety of disciplines.

Established as the nation’s 10th medical school in 1825, the institution has since grown to include a 612-bed hospital and a Level I trauma center, nationally recognized cancer and heart centers, a Children’s Hospital, and primary and specialty clinics throughout Central Virginia.

The UVA Medical Center is consistently ranked among the nation’s best hospitals by the U.S. News & World Report magazine and has been named among the top 25 percent in seven specialties.

INSPIRING STUDENTS, INSPIRED TEACHING

The vast majority of UVA students come from the top 10% of their high school class, as well as from all 50 states, over 142 countries and a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite their diversity, all UVA students share a love of learning and a drive to achieve.

One of the reasons students choose Virginia is our unique residential culture. At UVA, the community of students, faculty and staff personifies the Jeffersonian idea that living and learning are connected. The Academical Village was constructed to support a unique residential experience, with faculty living in the Pavilions, students occupying Lawn rooms and the world-famous Rotunda at its heart. The University’s residential culture continues to support this experience today—strengthened by students, faculty and staff rich in backgrounds, ideas and perspectives. Our unique culture is also paying dividends in innovation:  UVA’s faculty have generated more than 130 patents since 2010.

Perhaps most importantly, faculty come to UVA knowing that instruction is as important as research, and they pride themselves on their many teaching awards.  Our best professors look for ways to encourage, mentor and develop tomorrow’s leaders inside and outside the classroom.

LIFE IN CHARLOTTESVILLE
