Specifically, and with particular attention to the needs of specialized populations (e.g., student-athletes or others), provide guidance toward appropriate course selection for various requirements (e.g., university, major/minor, academic progress, NCAA, professional school, etc.) and the integration of those with other academic opportunities (e.g., overseas study, research, etc.).
  • Advise students (foremost student-athletes) in the selection and completion of courses for satisfaction of NCAA requirements, certification, and eligibility.
  • Provide counsel and direction to students at odds with university academic policies or deadlines, and regarding satisfactory academic progress.
  • Meet with students who experience complex circumstances or who have sensitive needs to provide academic guidance and make referrals to other campus resources as needed; meet with instructors, staff, and families (where appropriate).
  • Maintain summary records of advising interactions in Academic Advising/VPUE systems, adhering to university and VPUE policies and practices for handling confidential student information, and applying judgment in determining which student issues to bring to the attention of the Lead Undergraduate Advising Director for Student-Athletes and the Associate Dean, Academic Advisement
  • Participate as a key team member for processes related to athletic compliance, as well as academic progress and academic policy (i.e., Academic Progress and Petitions Review), applying university policies and VPUE practices to recommend outcomes and improved procedures.
  • Participate in mid-quarter, quarterly, and annual review of student-athletes' eligibility.
  • Review academic plans with student-athletes who are struggling with eligibility issues.
  • Review petitions related to academic policy, and participate in the overall office procedures through which petitions are managed.
  • Attain basic proficiency in software (e.g., Excel and other databases) necessary for the collection and presentation of data related to academic advising and special programs.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with athletic coaches, academic departments, the Office of the University Registrar, Student Services Center (SSC), the Office of Accessible Education (OAE), and other university resource offices as liaison for student-athlete processes and concerns.
