Job Summary

Assists in the repair and maintenance of a variety of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, steam, mechanical, automated control, and/or other building systems.

Responsibilities We are looking for a skilled individual to join our team as an HVAC helper. To be successful as an HVAC helper, you should have a strong working knowledge of HVAC systems as well as the tools related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of these systems.

The responsibilities of the HVAC helper include performing routine maintenance, replacing parts, repairing machinery, and furnishing the HVAC technicians with tools, materials, and supplies. An HVAC helper performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs for various HVAC systems, associated equipment, and other related duties as assigned. An HVAC helper lifts/moves heavy objects, climbs ladders, and works at heights. Willingness to take instruction and learn the trade is preferred. An HVAC helper must have ability to withstand long hours, weather, and very physical work.

Worker must know safety factors in the operation of equipment and materials and apply safety codes, ordinances, and regulations. Must be able to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required. Must be able to work independently and under minimal supervision.

EPA & HVAC credentials are required. Worker rotates on-call shifts and may be called to remain at work or return to work for occasional emergencies.

A top-notch HVAC helper should be able to perform physical tasks, be good with their hands, and able to effectively follow instructions. Must be able to climb ladders, climb steps, stoop, bend, and reach in the performance of HVAC maintenance tasks.

Typical Allocation of Duties:

Preventative maintenance - 25%
Perform preventative maintenance as directed and in accordance with established schedules and protocols.

Maintain tools and equipment - 25%
Maintain and repair tools and equipment used in the performance of maintenance and repair functions.

Training - 20%
Complete required training.

Repair and Replace - 10%
Assist in repairing and replacing systems and components of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, steam, mechanical, automated control, and/or other equipment.

Troubleshoot and diagnose - 10%
Assist in diagnosing problems with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, steam, mechanical, automated control, and/or other building systems.

Monitor - 5%
Monitors equipment operations and prepares required logs and reports for review by supervisor.

Other duties - 5%
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Required Experience
Completion of sufficient education or training to read and write simple instructions.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Position May Require Credit Check (if using P-Card, working with Cash, etc.).

Position Requires completion of VSU’s Annual Compliance Training course (such as State Business Transactions, Drug Free Workplace, Anti-Harassment Policy, Introduction to Information Security, Workers Compensation, Motor Vehicle Policy, USG Ethics Policy, Conflict of Interest/ Outside Activities Policy, Leave Procedures for Faculty and Staff, Georgia Open Records Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Contracts 101. Supervisory positions require training in FMLA and Worker’s Compensation.
