Responsibilities

Department Summary

The Department of English in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks to find part-time instructors to teach first-year writing classes at Valdosta State University. Part-time instructors may teach one or two classes per semester and focus on retention initiatives (maintaining an up-to-date gradebook in the learning management system, using the Success Portal to set early alerts for attendance and academic progress, and connecting students with support services) while also working with coordinators for First-Year Writing and World Literature. Successful candidates who can teach on-campus classes are preferred, but we sometimes need online classes as well. 100% Teaching

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree at the time of appointment in the appropriate field (minimum of eighteen hours in English, rhetoric and composition, writing studies, comparative literature, linguistics)
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning
Preferred Qualifications
  • A record of effective teaching appropriate to the applicant's career stage
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting
  • A record of mentoring students

Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Position May Require Credit Check (if using P-Card, working with Cash, etc.).

Position Requires completion of VSU’s Annual Compliance Training course (such as State Business Transactions, Drug Free Workplace, Anti-Harassment Policy, Introduction to Information Security, Workers Compensation, Motor Vehicle Policy, USG Ethics Policy, Conflict of Interest/ Outside Activities Policy, Leave Procedures for Faculty and Staff, Georgia Open Records Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Contracts 101. Supervisory positions require training in FMLA and Worker’s Compensation.
