Job Details

The Onondaga Community College Board of Trustees seeks confidential nominations and expressions of interest for the College’s ninth President. The successful candidate will lead the institution to greater heights as it continues to provide quality educational programs and services to residents of Central New York.

Onondaga Community College (OCC) is a two-year college, founded in 1961, with two locations: a 280-acre main campus in Central New York state, just outside the city limits of Syracuse, New York, and a nearby satellite location in Liverpool, New York. OCC is one of 30 community colleges operating under the State University of New York (SUNY) system and is locally sponsored by Onondaga County. OCC is a values-based institution that strives to embody and fulfill its values in meaningful and substantive ways.

OCC has eight Schools and offers 46 credit-bearing degree and certificate programs that prepare individuals for transfer to four-year colleges or for immediate entry into high-demand careers. This includes nine new programs and transfer opportunities in programs such as Health Studies, Paramedic, and Drone Technology, all designed to meet employer needs.

Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, OCC’s 9th President will build on the accomplishments of President Casey Crabill, who retires at the end of the current fiscal year. Some of the key strategic priorities include:

  • Develop strategies and initiatives to stop and reverse the enrollment decline, while simultaneously maintaining and ensuring the financial health and stability of the College.
  • Strengthen the College’s student success agenda and ensure that students receive the “wrap-around services” they need, and that students have pathway plans that lead them to timely degree and certificate completion, transfer, or entry into or advancement in the workforce.
  • Build on the college’s reputation through extensive outreach and innovative responses to student and community needs.
  • Maintain a highly visible and engaging presence in the different communities to acquire a thorough understanding of how OCC can best serve them.
  • Ensure that the College maintains and continues to demonstrate its commitment to equity in every area of the College.

To ensure full consideration, completed applications are due by December 6th, 2021. The search page, which includes the full Executive Search Profile as well as the opportunity to apply or nominate, is located here.

Organization

Onondaga Community College is a college of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and one of 30 locally sponsored community colleges throughout New York State. Onondaga County is our sponsor.

We offer over 40 degree and certificate programs. Our curricula include applied technologies, business, health professions, hospitality, human sciences, humanities and general studies, performing and visual arts, and science and math. And programs from Architecture to Computer Science to Nursing to Web Technology - and everything in between. Fifty-four percent of our students have the intent to transfer to a four-year university upon graduation. An advantage of the SUNY system is that credits are easily transferable between campuses for students who want to continue their education beyond the community college level. We are at the forefront of efforts to meet the accelerating pace of technological developments and requirements of continuing educational opportunity for all.

Our Community Education programs include classes for both personal enrichment and professional development. We also offer special programs for children and teens, small businesses and school districts. Community members take advantage of our olympic size pool both through our American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim and our recreational swimming programs.

Our campus is noted for its hills, wooded terrain, and expansive views of the surrounding countryside. Our Syracuse location, at the geographic center of New York, is within 350 miles of every major metropolitan center of the northeast. Our central location and accessibility in the heart of New York and the northeast make it easy to get here. We are near the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence Seaway as well as the Adirondack mountains.

Eight buildings house more than 50 programs. Enrollment has grown to over 11,000 students. We strive to provide the full college experience and offer a full complement of clubs and organizations to enrich student life. Several of our athletic teams are consistently nationally ranked, and our 2006 and 2007 men's lacrosse teams and 2008 men's tennis team won national championships. A comprehensive array of student support services enables our students to succeed in meeting their academic goals no matter what their life stage when entering the academic setting. And our Storer Auditorium and Ann Felton Multicultural Center serve as the primary locale for Arts Across Campus, a year-round series of high quality arts and cultural programming designed to enhance student learning through the arts.

Onondaga is a diverse educational learning community. We are committed to creating and maintaining an atmosphere where individuality is not only recognized - but encouraged - to contribute to the fabric of the campus environment. We continue to serve the educational and economic development needs of the region and have over 38,000 alumni.

The breadth and depth of our programs and success of our students speaks volumes about the college's diverse and top-notch faculty. In fact, they're some of the most intelligent, creative, energetic people we've ever met. They love teaching as much as they love learning. In fact, we've heard many of our faculty comment on how much they learn from the students themselves. We think this reflects the genuine care and respect our faculty has for our students.
