Barton College, in Wilson, North Carolina, invites applications and referrals for the Controller position in the Administration and Finance Division.  The Controller reports directly to the CFO.

This position will lead a team to work competently and collaboratively to accurately record and report information in a timely and efficient manner and will lead all aspects of the annual audit to ensure that compliance is maintained. The Controller will develop and maintain the College's financial accounting system to account for the receipt and expenditure of all funds, and to report operating results in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and industry best practices. The Controller is also responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the Business Office and Student Accounts operations. Additional oversight of accounting functions as it relates to College financial aid activities is required.

Job Summary/Essential Functions:

  • Management of Staff: provide day-to-day supervision and oversight of all accounting personnel of the College, including Business Office and Student Accounts staff (4 employees)
  • Supervise staff in accordance with College policies, including interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising and evaluating performance, and addressing performance problems or inefficiencies.
  • Oversight of Finances: Oversee and monitor the College’s financial condition:
  • Establish and maintain sound system of internal controls and segregation of duties.
  • Implement and communicate accounting pronouncement changes.
  • Implement proven best practices for Higher Education as applicable.
  • Assure that all financial transactions are recorded timely and accurately in the accounting system.
  • Conduct critical analysis of account balances investigate reconciling items.
  • Maintain a current chart of accounts for all funds and assign account numbers.
  • Establish and monitor College business policies and procedures that effectively utilize resources and facilities to accomplish institutional goals; direct and implement changes to College procedures as needed. Ensure policies and procedures are in compliance with relevant federal, state, and regulatory requirements and communicate in a way to help campus stakeholders understand the impact of their financial areas as needed.
  • Interpret corporate financial policies, new and existing government legislation, and accounting theory.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the tax laws applicable to local sales and use tax, and non-profit organizations.
  • Daily Support of Business Office Functions:
  • Fixed asset tracking and calculation of depreciation
  • Preparation and/or verification of all accounting ledger entries and perform monthly closing
  • Analyze general ledger accounts and answers inquiries as needed
  • Student billing process and student aid reconciliations
  • Title IV reconciliation with Financial Aid records, funding draws from Dept. of Education, and state grant reporting and compliance (in coordination with Director of Treasury Services)
  • Preparation and submission of sales and use taxes monthly and refund reports bi-annually
  • Prepare and maintain accurate reporting with reporting requirements, including but not limited to:
  • Annual financial reports and other recurring and special reporting as needed to ensure that financial information is recorded and reported according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Governmental Accounting Standards Board Pronouncements, Financial Accounting Standards Board Accounting Standards Codification, as well as federal and state regulations such as Uniform Guidance
  • Completion of annual financial surveys as required (IPEDS, NACUBO Endowment, NCAA EADA, FISAP, etc.). Prepare various reports, analyses, and surveys as requested by senior management and constituents, including Board of Trustees committee reports, year-end historical comparative reports, Athletic Department income/expenditures, among others.
  • Monthly financial statements
  • Quarterly data/benchmarking reports
  • Maintain integrity of internal systems:
  • Plan and manage revisions to, enhancements of, or implementation of financial systems. Serve as the College’s financial representative in the design and implementation of additions to the College-wide ERP system, such as interfacing with third-party programs and the implementation of Information Technology General Controls
  • Coordinate new procedures, training materials, and system documentation; conduct training; supervise the conversion of data to the new systems and analyze and reconcile the data to ensure integrity
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Master’s degree in business or accounting (preferred).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or other relevant professional certifications.
  • Three or more years’ supervisory experience.
  • Excellent communications and management skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and ERP systems for comparable sized or larger institutions.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operations, functions, and scope of authority common in business affairs in College or similar organizations.
  • Ability to organize, manage, and be highly productive meeting deadlines and to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience in higher education institutions, large nonprofit organizations or similar institutions.
