The Binghamton University (SUNY) Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Voice (Soprano or Mezzo-Soprano preferred), to commence in the Fall 2022 semester in a tenure-track position. The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher of graduate and undergraduate voice majors, will develop a national or international profile as a performer and teacher, and will contribute to the Department's educational and artistic mission to prepare students for music careers in the 21st century. SUNY faculty are represented by United University Professionals. This position is part of a multi-year cluster hire within Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, "Arts Practice, Performance, and Research in the 21st Century." This program aims to establish a network of artists and scholars who see their mission as foundational to an intellectually rigorous liberal arts education and who take an expansive approach to their creative activities, research programs, and pedagogy. Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a full-time teaching load consisting of a studio of voice majors in the graduate and undergraduate programs, including a weekly studio class and preparation for degree recitals.
  • Serve on co-curricular audition panels, juries, recital committees, and in other vocal-area activities as necessary.
  • Recruit students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Develop a national or international profile as a performer and/or teacher of voice.
  • Serve the department and university through student advising and committee service.

The Binghamton University Music Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, and has a longstanding cooperative relationship with Tri-Cities Opera. It offers Master of Music degrees with concentrations in vocal and instrumental performance, collaborative piano, conducting, composition, and musicology, as well as the Master of Music in Opera. Undergraduate majors include the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Bachelor of Music in Performance. Department classes, ensembles, and studio lessons also serve students from across the university. The department has a strong record of nurturing students who go on to prestigious graduate and postgraduate programs, young-artist programs, and professional careers.

The Music Department has a strong commitment to hearing and amplifying the voices of those who have been historically excluded in concert programming and pedagogy. Members of historically excluded groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Voice or a closely related area. 
  • A substantial professional performing profile embracing a range of classical and related musical styles. 
  • Evidence of mentoring, training, and nurturing pre-professional singers of all voice types, with a commitment to access, equity, diversity, and inclusion. 
  • Applied knowledge of current literature and contemporary research in vocal pedagogy and performance practice. 
  • Experience teaching pre-professional singers in a variety of classical and related musical styles. 
  • A demonstrated ongoing commitment to performing and teaching music composed by women, BIPOC composers, and other historically excluded groups. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Soprano or mezzo-soprano voice (to complement current faculty). 
  • Experience recruiting a diverse range of talented applicants to collegiate-level music programs.
  • A record of creative and innovative artistic activities that expand the repertoire of the concert-music tradition, reach traditionally underserved publics, and engage the changing landscapes of musical culture. 
  • Professional experience with arts organizations of varying sizes, structures, and missions. ~ Experience in arts entrepreneurship, creating or curating performance opportunities for oneself and others.

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
