DEAN, SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

BROWN UNIVERSITY

Providence, RI

Brown University seeks a dynamic leader and distinguished academic to serve as its second Dean of the School of Engineering, a distinctively interdisciplinary engineering school that produces cutting-edge research and world-class educational programs. The Dean will assume leadership at a time of tremendous opportunity to build on great momentum of the past decade and strategically grow the School of Engineering to elevate its impact on the world through research and teaching.

As the third-oldest engineering program in the nation and oldest in the Ivy League, Brown Engineering has a proud history of providing an outstanding educational experience and high-impact cross-disciplinary research. Elevated to school status in 2010, engineering at Brown has grown significantly in the past decade. Under its inaugural dean, the School moved quickly and effectively to fulfill ambitions to grow as a stand-alone School, with more than $150 million raised since 2015. Recent developments include the construction of an 80,000-square-foot state-of-the-art research and teaching center; an enhanced and expanded faculty, including nine endowed chairs; rapidly expanding graduate programs, including three new unique collaborative master’s programs in Technology Leadership, Design Engineering, and Data-Enabled Computational Engineering and Science; and surging research awards. With Brown’s longstanding commitment to engineering, excellence in the physical and life sciences, and strong liberal arts foundation, Brown Engineering emphasizes interdisciplinary thought and recognizes that engineering is intertwined with every aspect of our lives. The School is organized without the traditional departmental boundaries found in most engineering schools and benefits from a structure and culture that allows for frequent collaborations with other scholarly disciplines such as biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, computer science, the humanities, and the social sciences.

Located in Providence’s vibrant and historic East Side, Brown is a leading research university that is renowned for its distinctive undergraduate and graduate experience. Brown attracts well-rounded, creative, and inquisitive students drawn to its open curriculum model and a faculty who are world-class scholars and educators.

Brown seeks a Dean with a creative vision; collaborative spirit; commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and leadership acumen to guide the School through its next phase of growth and development. The new Dean will articulate a compelling vision of what Brown Engineering should be and inspire people, both within and outside of the University, to join in pursuit of that vision. The new Dean must be able to facilitate the collaboration of engineering with other programs at Brown, preserving the School’s culture and identity while building on existing research strengths and exploring areas of future development. While the School has worked hard to diversify its student body, diversifying the faculty will continue to be a priority in addition to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all throughout this period of growth and change. The Dean will also serve as the external face of Brown Engineering, communicating its exceptional story in such a way that raises its profile and visibility. In addition to an outstanding record of scholarly achievement, the successful candidate will bring a deep commitment to furthering the research enterprise while also shaping the future of engineering education through innovative, bold, inspired, and effective leadership.
