Primary Function:

The Employee Assistance Program Counselor will provide Employee Assistance services for NIU faculty and staff, their dependents, and annuitants. The services are shorter term in nature and include counseling, coaching, consultation with referral and linkage for specific, specialized needs and delivery of an array of career, professional development, and wellness trainings and events.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally):

  • Provide a wide array of confidential Employee Assistance services including assessment, short-term counseling, referral, linkage and case management services to faculty and staff, their dependents, and annuitants;
  • Provide individual and group educational, training and wellness presentations and activities;
  • Provide short-term consultation and coaching services to employees and supervisors for personal and/or work-related difficulties and situations;
  • Provide conflict resolution and guided mediation services for employees, groups, and supervisors;
  • Consult with and provide education to employees, staff, supervisors, and departments concerning mental health, substance misuse, work-related, personal, and interpersonal difficulties, and concerns;
  • Coordinate and provide Career and Professional development advisement for staff to pursue advanced education and personal development of skills and aptitudes;
  • Provide crisis intervention and threat assessment services for employees and departments;
  • Maintain resources and working relationships with referral sources and collaborating partners to insure accurate and timely dissemination of information and continuity of care and updated resources and materials on Employee Assistance and Wellness topics.

Minimum Required Qualifications for this position:

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field;
  • 3 years of experience in the Mental Health field;
  • Experience with short-term counseling;
  • Previously developed and delivered training, wellness, and professional development presentations.

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Licensure as a mental health practitioner.
  • Proven experience as a mental health practitioner, trainer, educator, and advocate for others.

Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge of mental health best practices, current trends in the field, and research and service development experience in order to meet the counseling, training, career development, advisement, wellness and mediation needs of the university employees and annuitants.
  • Provide mental health subject matter expertise, collaboration, consultation, and support as a part of the Employee Assistance and Human Resources Services teams to meet the needs of the NIU community.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of personal and private information.
  • Experience with conflict resolution, mediation, and risk assessment and intervention.
  • Bring a deep understanding of the changes taking place in the mental health and education fields while overseeing the development and implementation of programs to the employees of NIU.
  • Advocate for the needs of the department to possess the resources necessary to serve the NIU community.
  • Effective skills, both oral and written
  • Sound judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrate a genuine respect for and commitment to diversity, as demonstrated by a record of promoting diversity within a student body, faculty, and administrative team.

Working Hours:

M-F 8-4:30; some nights and weekends required.

Minimum Pay Rate (Hourly or Monthly):

3,958.33 monthly; Annual Range ($47,500 - $52,500)

Actual hiring rate is commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity; position includes a robust benefits package to eligible applicants.
