The Department of Interdisciplinary and Inclusive Education offers a variety of opportunities for caring and dedicated undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate students to pursue initial certification as inclusive education, early childhood or elementary education teachers as well as an endorsement in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (special education). In addition, the department offers graduate programs that provide advanced study in curriculum and teaching, including the M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership and the M.A. in Special Education programs. The Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant program is also offered for students interested in pursuing post-master’s educational diagnostician certification. The department is committed to fostering student growth as instructional leaders who have a developmental perspective, cooperative disposition, and reflective orientation and are committed to the principles of access, success, and equity for all learners.

Description:

The College of Education is searching for a highly qualified and experienced associate professor with a strong background in science education to engage in collaborative equity-based research with faculty and initiate and support research projects for external funding. The candidate will teach methods courses in the Bachelor of Arts in Education, Elementary program (K-6). The successful candidate will participate in service initiatives, particularly program redevelopment and initiatives catered to a growing and diverse region. The successful candidate will have a research agenda and teaching philosophy that focuses on equity and social justice and is guided by a commitment to diversity, cultural responsiveness, and constructivism. A strong record of scholarship in an area of social justice & equity and leadership at the programmatic level is expected. This is a full-time, tenure-track position at the associate level.

Required Qualifications:

    Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in teacher education, elementary education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education at the time of application;

    Meets state licensure requirements for elementary education (K-6);

    A minimum of 3 years of successful teaching in diverse elementary settings;

    Demonstrates a record of excellence in higher education teaching, research, and service as well as a record of success in securing external funding to support scholarship;

    Strong, explicit commitment to educational equity and social justice and experience working in diverse settings;

    Strong understanding of various education systems such as public and private education centers, as well as public preschool and K-6 education programs

    Demonstrates ability and effectiveness in communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills;

    Demonstrates a commitment to culturally responsive and differentiated instruction, as well as collaboration, collegiality, and respect for all people;

    Demonstrates a commitment to working with multiple stakeholders, P-12 schools, community partners, and underrepresented groups of children; and

    A teaching/learning philosophy consistent with the mission of the College of Education that includes promoting change in schools through a lens of social justice.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

    Background in Science or STEM (highly preferred),

    Experience with higher education teaching in multiple formats, including online, hybrid, face-to-face, and supervision of teacher candidates;

    Experience with program coordination or leadership or a willingness to lead at the program level;

    Advocacy related to access, success, and equity issues in education;

    Familiarity with program recognition and the accreditation standards of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP); and

    Experience with multiple forms of assessment and the evaluation of practitioners, particularly Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching and edTPA.

Working at Rowan University 

Rowan University, located a half-hour outside of Philadelphia with its main campus in suburban Glassboro, N.J., is an institution on the move.

This summer, the University opened Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) in partnership with Cooper University Health Care, in Camden. The first new four-year, M.D.-granting medical school in New Jersey in more than 35 years, CMSRU welcomed its first class in August 2012.

Rowan continues to work with the Borough of Glassboro and private developers on Rowan Boulevard, a $300 million redevelopment project that links the University’s main campus to the historic downtown. This fall alone, the partners broke ground for a new academic building/parking garage and a Marriott Courtyard Hotel. Rowan Boulevard already includes a Barnes & Noble Collegiate Superstore, housing for approximately 1,300 students and retail space.

The University also recently created a School of Biomedical Sciences, which joins nine colleges. In addition to CMSRU they are: the Rohrer College of Business, Communication & Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Graduate & Continuing Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Performing Arts, and Science & Mathematics.

Earlier in 2012, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie awarded Rowan state research institution status (not Carnegie classification) as part of the New Jersey Medical and Health Science Education Restructuring Act, making Rowan only the second comprehensive public research institution in the State. That Act also opened the door to Rowan partnering with Rutgers-Camden to create a College of Health Sciences in Camden near CMSRU. The vision for that College calls for schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, food science and 16 allied health programs. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in nearby Stratford, N.J., is to become part of Rowan in the near future. When that occurs, Rowan will be only the second school in the nation with M.D. and D.O. medical programs.
