About the Department:

The Office of Information Technology’s (OIT) Identity and Web Services team operates and maintains NC State’s enterprise-level public-facing web infrastructure, develops custom-to-NC State tools for use by campus units, and creates interfaces for connecting WordPress websites to other enterprise applications. The team is responsible for life-cycle management, maintenance, and support of the web servers delivering content for the NCSU web presence at www.ncsu.edu as well as web servers delivering content for most academic and administrative web environments on campus. The team is also responsible for the development, maintenance, and support of Identity Management, Shibboleth web authentication, and Splunk log analysis environments as well as system administration of the University Google environment.

Essential Job Duties:

The IT System Administrator II is part of a team responsible for the development, maintenance, and support of the University’s Identity, log analysis, authentication, and web services environments. Specifically, this position is instrumental in the ongoing management and development of the Splunk log analysis system while also being involved in the deployment, configuration management, and support of enterprise level Linux systems powering many University technologies, ranging from Shibboleth Web authentication to web hosting environments both on premises and in the cloud. This position will also participate heavily in Linux configuration management projects and work to meet security and compliance standards such as PCI, NIST, and ISO 27002.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Master’s degree and at least one year of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming, or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with system administration of log analysis and/or Security Information and Event Management systems (ex: Splunk, ELK, LogRhythm, QRadar, or similar).
  • Extensive knowledge of Linux operating systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple programming languages.
  • Experience with CI/CD utilizing Git / GitHub (or equivalent remote repository solution).
  • Understanding of core networking and security principles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Linux-based configuration management technologies (ex: Puppet, Chef, Ansible).
  • Experience with Splunk Enterprise.
  • Programming expertise in Python or PHP.
  • Experience with Linux OS performance tuning and optimization.
  • Experience with Linux-Based web (Apache/Nginx/Tomcat) and database (MySQL/MariaDB/Oracle) services.
  • Working knowledge of ServiceNow help desk software (or similar ITSM software).
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly and independently.
  • Experience leading training workshops and public speaking.
  • Experience writing both technical and end user focused documentation.
