Description:

Hamilton College seeks a collaborative, highly organized, and skilled communicator to serve as the Director of Health Professions Advising, administering the advising program for students and alumni interested in health-related careers. This is a full-time, 12-month position in Academic Affairs; the Director reports to the Dean of Engaged Education as part of Hamilton’s integrated ALEX program (Advise, Learn, Experience). 

The responsibilities of the Director include:

  • Through individual appointments and workshops, advising students and alumni regarding how to prepare and apply for their intended professional health care education, and how to obtain shadowing and other career-related experiences;

  • Coordinating the committee letter process, and drafting letters of recommendation for students and alumni applying to medical and dental schools; 

  • Working closely with faculty members on the Health Professions Advising Committee, to develop and maintain effective policies and procedures to support students and alumni as they move through their academic careers and the graduate/professional school application process; 

  • In collaboration with career advisors and academic resource centers, assisting individual students and alumni with personal statements and interview preparation;

  • Working with career center and alumni relations staff to coordinate programs and opportunities, to promote and strengthen health-related career exploration and experiences for students;

  • Gathering information on program admission requirements, and improving external understanding of Hamilton College, by attending professional meetings, researching websites and listservs, and visiting health profession schools; 

  • Coordinating early-assurance agreements and processes with participating medical schools, and shadowing agreements with local hospitals; 

  • Collaborating with faculty and staff advisors across campus; and

  • Directing the activities of pre-health support staff and student workers. 


Qualifications:

Relevant Master’s or professional degree and at least five years of advising experience required (pre-health advising preferred), or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

The Director must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills; attention to detail; a commitment to equity, inclusion, and assessment; and an ability to work effectively as both a team member and a leader, with a diverse range of administrators, faculty, students, alumni, and staff. Candidates should also have experience with relevant technology platforms and tools.
