Position OverviewThe Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (KUCDD) is searching for an Assistant Research Professor to support research on self-determination for people with disabilities across the life course. This position will work across projects to contribute to the development of new and implementation of existing funded research projects, support research grant development, and author or co-author scientific papers or other dissemination products for presentation and publication. These research projects include focus in the following areas:
  • Large-scale training and coaching for self-determination intervention to support youth and young adults to engage in goal setting, action planning, and self-evaluation activities
  • Community-based research with young adults and adults with intellectual and development disabilities to support decision making, self-determination, and employment
  • School-based research with students with autism and/or other disabilities using self-determination instruction and peer supports
  • Research focused on implementing evidence-based interventions, aligned with the tenets of implementation science
The University of Kansas, Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (KUCDD) is recognized as a leading research center in the field of disability. KUCDD implements and conducts grant-funded projects focusing on (a) applied research on effective assessment and intervention practices with a particular focus on self-determination, transition to employment, supported decision making and (b) interdisciplinary training in the disability field. KUCDD is part of the Life Span Institute (LSI), a leading research unit at the University of Kansas. As a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) funded by the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the core functions of the KUCDD are:
  • Community Services (including technical assistance, community education, and direct services)
  • Information Dissemination
  • Interdisciplinary Training
  • Research
This position is located at the University of Kansas-Lawrence.

KUCDD research staff are expected to actively engage in research projects and disseminate research results through print, online resources, and direct, in-person presentation of information. Under the supervision of the Director of KUCDD, the Assistant Research Professor will advance research in the disability field, including focus on areas such as self-determination assessment and intervention, transition, community-based participatory research (CBPR), and community engagement. The Assistant Research Professor will be expected to lead research design in support of the development of new and implementation of existing funded research projects, and support grant preparation activities, including building their own line of research as well as author or co-author scientific papers or other dissemination products for presentation and publication. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and interest in disability, self-determination, transition and/or community-based participatory research; has a doctoral degree in special education or educational psychology, or other related social or behavioral science field; and has previous experience with developing grant submissions in disability research. 55% - Research Grant Development
Lead development of grant proposals to support research activities relevant to the mission of KUCDD, including preparation of all required elements for federal, state, or other grant applications.
  • Develop research questions and other narrative components
  • Collaborate with staff statisticians to select appropriate research designs and statistical techniques to prepare methods and analysis plans
  • Establish research partnerships to solicit letters of support, as required
  • Coordinate input from resource teams within the KU Life Span Institute (project development, finance and grant planning, communication) during grant preparation
  • Strengthen existing research partnerships within LSI and with other KU units, build new relationships with community partners to support development of cooperative grant applications, and integrate community-based participatory research into grant development
20% - Research Management and Supervision
Contribute to the implementation of existing, funded research projects in the areas of self-determination assessment and intervention, transition, community-based participatory research (CBPR), and community engagement.
  • Conduct and/or guide data analyses from research projects that use the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI) and Self-Determination Inventory (SDI) as well as other interventions and assessments designed to increase self-determination
  • Integrate participatory research, social network analysis, and community mapping and engagement methodologies into research activities
  • Lead regular research project meetings, including overseeing the development of meeting agenda/notes, in accessible and inclusive ways
  • Support recruitment activities for research projects with support from professional staff and students
  • Oversee and deliver trainings and other development activities, aligned with research projects goals as necessary
  • Supervise the work of professional staff and students supporting research project goals
  • Secure Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval when appropriate and ensure that research integrity policies are followed for all research involving human subjects
  • Prepare and submit progress reports to federal, state, and other funding agencies
15% - Dissemination of Research Findings
  • Write technical reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, or other manuscripts related to research project activities and analyses
  • Disseminate and present findings and research activities at local, state, and national meetings and conferences
10% Service:
  • Provide service to KUCDD, profession, university, and community/public
  • Engage and participate in community, state, and national meetings or groups that focus on self-determination, community engagement, asset-building, transition to post-secondary education and employment, or supports needs assessment
  • Participate in at least one professional association as a member and in association operations
  • Provide service to the field as a reviewer of research publications and consultant for government agencies and foundations and other funding agencies
  • Provide consultation or educational support to local community groups or agencies
  • Participate in KUCDD Leadership Team meetings and events
Required Qualifications
  1. PhD degree in education (special education or educational psychology) or other related discipline (e.g., social work, psychology, public policy).
  2. Three years of research experience with research and publication record in areas such as or related to: self-determination assessment and instruction, transition, community-based participatory research (CBPR), and community engagement as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Three years of experience participating in grant development and submissions as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Documented understanding of the broad complex, dynamic, and diverse nature of disability research and familiarity with the varied perspectives of multiple stakeholders as indicated by application materials and interview.
  5. Demonstrated strong professional writing skills, including research reports, peer-reviewed research articles, other print and electronic publications and experience presenting at conferences and professional meetings as indicated by application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Currently hold grant funding as a PI, co-PI, or co-I for an active research project related to areas such as: self-determination assessment and instruction, transition, community-based participatory research (CBPR), and community engagement.
  2. Specific knowledge and interest in self-determination research as indicated by application materials and interview.
  3. Two or more years of experience in developing and managing project-related budgets and timelines.
  4. Two or more years of experience directing federally and state funded research projects.
  5. Two or more years of experience in participating in and contributing to approaches to training and research that use interdisciplinary teams and varied perspectives.
  6. Strong organizational and communication skills as demonstrated by application materials and interview.
  7. Ability to work well with diverse populations and communities, including people with disabilities.
  8. More than three years of proficiency with software such as Microsoft Access, Excel, SPSS, SAS, or R.
